I've had a number of these over the years, and this was not a good example. The bottle was in great shape, fill reasonably high, and the cork in great shape. But the wine was tired with no complexity to the fruit. It had the very light color of old Barolo, but was missing the tannins and red fruit that should have been there. It was sound and not oxidized - just tired.

Delicious - very mature and smooth. Initially, I thought I had waited too long but the bottle seemed to resurrect itself over the next 30 minutes or so.

Refined and tasty package of aged Barolo features, black tea, tar, rose water. Long and lingering, this bottle lives up to the reputation of the vintage. Some rate the -64 above the -61, Renato Ratti gives the -64 5/5 and Wasserman's Italy's Noble Wines (Second Edition 1991) regards the -64 "perhaps the best of the decade". According to INW Angelo Gaja considers the -64 overrated. My votes go for the -64 (not that anyone's probably interested).

Cloudy (dediment) brown hue but wonderful Nebbiolo bouquet and nice fruit and balance on the palate. Wine evolved in the glass. Very nice for a very old wine.
