Gorgeous classical Rioja made from a single vineyard planted in 1945, a blend of 90% Tempranillo, 8% Garnacha and 2% Graciano, aged for 16 months in new FR oak. Deep garnet colour. Intense and complex aroma of dried cherries, prunes, dry leaves, leather, sweet tobacco, cardamon, dried tomato. Medium body, lean texture filled with concentrated ripe and dried fruits together mingle with dried and smoky herbs. Great depth and persistence along well integrated powdery tannins.

Fabulous! Opened at 10 o´clock drunk around 9 a.m. together with an incredible La Nieta 2005. Both head to head the Calvario is a bit mature, more complex and tends to be a tad more toward red fruit. A real pleasure, a fantastic wine and sadly it is a pricey hobby to buy cases of this. One great Rioja and in my eyes a modern classic.

Clear medium/deep garnet with big clear legs; clean medium plus nose of jammy cassis, balsamic, vanilla, cocoa, hint of barnyard and fresh turned earth; dry; medium plus acidity; medium plus tannins; high alcohol; medium plus body; medium plus flavor intensity; pfn; medium plus finish; smells and tastes more like a new world wine than what I was expecting; plenty of fruit on the palate along with lovely tertiary notes - not at all like licking a piece of wood!; outstanding quality; drink now or in another 5 years
