  • Italian Varietals from WA/OR/CA and Italy...Blind; 1/23/2010-1/24/2010 (Eastside Wine Storage): The nose was lovely, absolutely lovely. Tar, smoke, some metallic sensations, red licorice...it was really interesting and singular
the palate was intense, with dark, heavy tannin, good acid, and it tasted "purple" which means only something to me. Nice mouthfeel....my first aglianico, so I had no idea how to guess what this was in the blind format. Very good, though.

  • This was my first Aglianico and a major disappointment. When I first opened it the nose was tight & closed. I did get faint aromas of sour cherry, black currant and figs. The palate was excruciatingly sour and very dry. After an hour in the decanter the nose had opened up quite a bit. The bouquet was much stronger with a bit of tobacco joining the initial aromas. The cherry had also become much more dominant. The palate was still sour, very dry and bitter with matching cherry, black currant, fig and tobacco flavors. It was moderately tannic. Overall, this was expensive and not very good…I hate having a bad introduction to a new varietal. I think it’s just this wine and not Aglianico as a whole…I’ll just have to try more and see! My wife disliked it about as much as I did.
