  • An Australian legend that has been stunning for decades. A once a year treat, this bottle was as good as they come. Still purple at the core with some red showing through. Fully integrated, with its acid, fruit and tannin seamless, giving it a wonderful silky feel, from top to bottom and front to back. Very deep and generous. Hasn’t changed in 20 years and has at least that long to go.

  • i typed in 101/100 to be a bit silly but this wine is a 100 points every day of the year. From a recent tasting I do not think this wine has aged at all in the past 15-20 years. the last bottle half owned by me and a mate and drank at his 50th was surreal. Bacon fat, plush dense crimson purple rich colour and heavily ladden with dark blue and ripe ripe plummy and red fruits with earthy very sweet leathering . its almost beyond description. the taste goes on for 60 + seconds. it is other worldly. spend the money and buy one to try before to die. stunning. can be aged another 25 years without a doubt

  • At 'The Wolfe'. From a very cool private cellar, this wine is an Australian legend that was a revelation when I had it in 1981. It remains a deep blueberry colour with a nose of horse and saddle, blueberries, blackberries and dark cherries with touches of earth and spice. The palate is distinctive because of the softness yet brightness of the pure fruit balanced by very fine tannins all in the manner of a mature Burgundy yet with a distinct blue note to the fruit. The horse and saddle thing does not intrude but adds complexity. Clearly what we called 'character' is now called 'brett' and its interesting to imagine this wine without it - I suspect it would be better and purer for it yet it sits well within the overall structure. A remarkable old Hunter valley wine that tells a story of a very special terroir and distinctive wine making technique. Delicious and a privilege to drink.

  • 3110 and Friends: Another chance to try this wine of the greatest repute. Deeply coloured, fading only slightly around the very edges. A fantastic nose of cola, sweet raspberry, earth, white pepper and other spice as well as an intense licorice element. Over a couple of hours in the glass it seemed to take on even more earth aromas as well as bacon. Seemed to have more power and force than the last bottle I tried 6 years ago which given its age is surprising but inspiring in a way. The acidity is impressive as it keeps up with the powerful fruit and carries into a nicely long finish. Still a great Hunter Valley icon and it is easy to see why, even with both bottles showing differently but of almost equally high quality. A privileged to encounter this wine once more.

  • Geoff Lindsay's 50th: Full of life. Spicy red fruits and seemingly lots of supporting acid. Incredibly fresh and lively.
