Clonakilla winery (Canberra): {screwcap, A$150} Developing nose, but always a touch vegetal. Earthy as well, but not really all that interesting. Little primary fruit evident; it’s more like a leathery/bretty old Hunter shiraz than a cool-climate flagship. Medium weight. Low/medium dusty tannins, medium acid. Balance of structure is fine, it’s just the flavours themselves which seem flat and washed out. Maybe decanting would help.

The wine is still a bit reticent. Elegant and beautifully fresh acidity, herbaceous, a slight touch of pleasant sweetness, slightly sticky tannin and a good length. Better wait a few more years. Try around 2027. 92 - 93+

The red fruit and viognier vibrancy whet your palate. There is meat, earth, iron, malt and a whole lot else going on. Clonakilla still make one of the best SV. Mixed pepper, lime acidity and faint and fine tannin to the finish. Still has some time on its side.

Deep, slightly muted in this line up. Elegant but muscular medium body, showing some of the barnyard that this varietal shows with age. Viognier addition, at this awkward mid life stage, only seen in the very last moment of the finish. Struggled in this line up because of its impeccable balance and grace. Was better on it's own before dinner. Excellent and aging well. Drink now to 5.
