  • Deep ruby center with lighter edge. Initially deep dark berries with spicy, peppery bouquet. Fruit eventually gives way to brighter mouth feel and acidity. Remarkable for a negotiant syrah (even if J.L. Chave) at this age, though this drinks well both young or old. Very enjoyable.

  • (Vertical tasting of Domaine Chave St Joseph wines)
A "JL Chave Selection," this was a bit of a ringer since it wasn't a Domaine Chave wine. I believe this was the first vintage of this wine made by Chave. Who would have thought it would still be alive and well nearly 20 years on? Not as deep or as complex as the Domaine wine of the same year, but as someone remarked, "if this had been tasted on its own, it would have been very. very attractive." Good bottle, but should be drunk up within the next 6 months or so. Impressive.

  • I have drunk this wine regularly since it was released, and I am still amazed by the ability to stay alive. J.L. Chave is indeed one of my absolute favourites when it comes to Rhone, however mainly Hermitage then, but this wine is a wine a frequently return to - for a good reason.

Red colour, not too deep, however not a clear brick tone either - still some purple tones in the colour still. Plums, leather and dark berries on the nose. Well hung meat and nicely integrated oak. The smell of fresh berries have been transformed into a more mature aroma. Still well structures, nice fruit and a long good finish. The finish also have hints of pepper nicely integrated. The palate is mainly influences by plums, leather, some oak and hints of wet forest.

This wine was indeed more "wild" as a young wine but have now entered a different state - I assume it is all about preferences. From my point of view it is in an elegant state at the moment, however I doubt that there is more to gain by a further life in the cellar. I would, however, like to underline the very elegant current state.

    Drink within 1-2 years.

  • Every eighteen months or so, we open a bottle of 95 Chave Offerus. Year in, year out, we say something like:

"Gee, this is nice, but it is pretty structured and tight. I wonder if it'll come around at some point. Seems like it's drying."

and then friends we have it with say, "Gee it seems like it might be over the hill."

    The rule of fifteen years.

Tonight we do our regular opening. A different deal. Lush, meaty, salty, nice acids, floral, gardenias. Relaxed. Special. Secondaries transitioned to early tasty tertiaries.

Remember, ye people, the rule of fifteen, with regards to good Northern Rhones.

  • Robust nose of plum, currant, and saddle leather. Palate of plum, currant/red fruits, good acidity, good length, great balance. Some maturity, seemed too young for 13 year old wine. But, after 2 hrs, it faded fast and showed its age.
