  • Colour is light straw: rather than taking on some of the greenish hues of a NZ savvy, this one seems to be closer to the gold of unoaked chardonnay.

Aromatics need to be coaxed out (a bit too cold) but reveal a HUGE amount of exotic spice, pink grapefruit, and even a bit of bubblegum (!). The viscosity on this 13.9% monster is evident upon swirling; I believe this is due to the partial appasimento process that the wine undergoes.

WOW. What is this I'm tasting? Is this really SB? While lacking the knifeblade acidity and overt citrus tones, this wine takes on a more semillon-like character on the palate. Thick, and I mean THICK - the heaviest mouthfeel on a SB in a LONG time. Oak spice flares up first, and the spice theme drives the buried orange, pineapple and grapefruit tones in the background. The intense palate impression lingers for a good 30 seconds.

This is extremely unique and VERY interesting, but cannot be judged as a regular sauvignon blanc. The texture, the richness, the soft palate impression and the forward spice tones make this seem almost like a dry Sauternes. I'm going to give this 89 points, plus one for the pure novelty of an appasimento sav.
