Final bottle, pristine condition, perfect cork. Is wine about perfection, or is it about emotion? Is wine about other people’s “points”, or is it about a personal connection? Are you looking for anonimity elevated to its highest level, or do you want to experience individuality presented in its truest form? Do you want to pay through the nose for perfect boredom in a bottle, or are you willing to make an effort to find imperfect excitement that does not intend to the neighbours jealous? Is collecting wine about the elevation of a certain part of the male anatomy, or is it about the elevation of the vineyard? At almost twenty years of age, this wine elicits all these questions. For those people who know where a wine is from, have walked through the vineyard, have met the vigneron, have tasted at the domaine, have established a connection of the spirit, the “product” transcends into something thay touches the drinker’s soul. It’s a true 1999 and a true Savigny, wonderfully energetic and powerful, with that sauvage nose brimming with floral stems, youthful fruit, and great mineral energy which turns into a timid but gloriously primordial existence on the finish. It isfar from perfect, but what is perfection without connection?

At 17 years of age, this is a wonderful, sturdy but not too rustic, Savigny from a great vintage. It is tannic, mineral and energetic, it is slender and structured but it does not lack fruit or charm, it remains perfectly fresh but shows lovely hints of tertiary development (white almond, champignon de Paris), there are floral notes and a touch of sauvage (but it is not earthy), the finish is slightly bloody (iron) and drying (black tea, cranberries), but it is interesting and length is good. A classic in its modest way.

Mature but lively appearance; open nose shows good depth and some tertiary development; impressive freshness on the palate, has fleshed out nicely, lovely Savigny-sauvage, juicy cherry fruit, silky texture, appropriate phenolic grip; good length. Goes to show that in great vintages like 1999, even less exalted wines need ample time to reach their apogee.

Last tasted in August 2009, when it still was rather closed and dfficult. Much more approachable now. Delicious, sweet, clean Pinot-fruit, cool minerality, hardly any secondary development; sturdy but not rustic, slender but not thin, good juicy acidity and tannic grip, slightly sauvage but not tough; good length, dried fruit and cold tea indicating that this wine is mature; lovely vitality at 12+ years of age. Food wine but drinking very well on its own.
