  • Book Club (Foretti's): Blind: definitely straw, then sticking with the Carlisle theme. wrong on the producer.

Classic syrah markers but not hint at the age. Black olive, iodine, herb, and violet. Please, I’d like to revisit.

  • Bookclub (served blind)--My Turn (Foretti's in Corona Del Mar): From my older Copain fight last night which I did blind for the group: 2010 Brosseau, 2007 Hawks Butte and 2011 Halcon. All of these wines were 'only one left' bottles, which have been in my cellar for quite some time as I wanted to find the right time to do them all blind. Picked last night to put them in front of the group. I have drank just under 2 cases of this wine over the years, as it's consistently brought me great joy and contemplation. Last night's bottle, while it's my final one, remains delicious and is a credit to what Wells did with syrah once he decided to make the shift way back in 2007. This wine reflects that shift of lowering his alcohols, dropping the new oak way down, etc. Nose has a bloody/marrow quality. The fruit is dark-tined, with olive, game and light leather. And even with all of the age this has seen, the concentration remains, the wine seems youthful to me and is aging so well. If I had more of this (or can find more when it pops up), I will buy it. What a winner this was and continues to be!

  • Fabulous black olive scent (finest Kalamata, in brine, with olive oil congealing on the surface); light-bodied savoury entry with fried bacon; mid-palate subdued and dry; short finish. This felt nicely mature, but not sure it's a long-distance runner. 90P

  • 3rd and final bottle of this gem. P&P, ready to perform right from the first sip. Dark Syrah scents and what I always find in riper CA Syrah, roasted corn which I find very appealing. At 13 years in, this is going quite fine thank you. A solid core of blackberries for sure, but it has retreated as other savory elements have stepped in and joined the fray. At once playful and complex, hard to imagine someone not digging it. Put another way, we had this right after the 10 Levet Journaries, and it was easily apparent the two wines had their souls in the same place despite the technical differences one might notice if looking from a purely analytic point of view. Certainly at peak, no rush, but too good not to enjoy the 07 Hawkes Butte in the Summer of 2020.

  • Still dark ruby with no browning. Lue fruit nose with hint I’d Sweetarts. Palate has a bit of minerailty/clay, black raspberry and rosemary. Long finish with mellow but firm tannins. Still has a decent number of years to go.
