  • At almost 12 years of age, orange appearing around the edges, this value Barolo made by the house of Ascheri for Tesco is drinking very well, the tannins soft, the acidity lively but not overwhelming, the various elements nicely integrated. And it works as a representative Barolo, if on the basic side, like the rest of Tesco's quality range. Upon opening, it's all mushroom, earthy and savoury, then licorice, then the tar and flowers (if not quite roses) that define Barolo -- as if Tesco asked Ascheri to hit all the right notes. The fruit is fairly thin, but raspberry and cherry stand out, turning sour on the palate, along with leather and chocolate. (More time in the open brings out strong blackberry and blackcurrant notes, as well as raisin and dried fig.) All in all, it's reasonably complex, if just a touch too sour and lacking depth -- a very good Barolo that points to what makes Barolo so famous.

  • Supermarket Own-Label Taste-Off: Sainsbury's vs. Tesco (16 Berkeley Square): A huge disappointment. Might be that this just needs time (and needed time to open up tonight) - there's obviously a ton of tannin here, but this doesn't feel like it has the fruit or acidity to really age beneficially. Drinkable, but certainly not worth £16!
