A touch of barnyard old world aromatics combined with very new world aromatics. Loads of evergreen forest and vanilla bean that intersperse with black raspberry. Wonderful acidity that seems to have integrated well, especially in this hot vintage. Alcohol is just a touch out of balance. I had this with and without food. Without the food it was very new world, but with the food the earthier elements came to the front on the palate.

Tasted at the domaine. V.J. harvested late in 2003 - well after the Sept. 5 rain. From vies near the domaine, at the Chateauneuf / CdR border. Chocolately tannins, prune, dark fruit. Lightly meaty.

Nose of red cherries with the underlying subtle herbal and earthy qualities that identify this as ripe grenache; the palate delivers with sweet fruit and minerals, and is actually quite tannic just now. I'm going to hold the rest of these for at least a year and see what happens. I'll be surprised if the wine isn't outstanding at that point.

Tannins essentially resolved, and the wine is drinking very, very nicely. Terrific CdR. Drink now and for another two or three years.

France Trip Part 1 - Châteauneuf-du-Pape; 6/16/2006-6/17/2006: Tasted at the domaine. Great nose, turns a little green and acidic on the palate. Zin-like; tannic.
