Open 24 hours: I tasted this wine a little more than a year ago and did not like it. I can remember it lacking fruit and being very rustic with a tough structure. The only Barbera wines I have had before this were usually a lighter wine with bright red fruit and high acid. This is not that type of Barbera, that's for sure. This is a bit more serious, a bit more masculine. The nose is calmed down from my initial taste yesterday, showing subdued red fruit, herb garden (namely dill and rosemary), asphalt, and a faint hint of lime. Nice feel across the palate, somewhere between middle and heavy in weight. The fruit on the palate comes across with both some fresher components as well as a bit of dried fruit character. Nice progression through the mid-palate, pretty gentle but still carrying a good amount of tannin and acidity, showing decent balance. Some fresh plum flavors peak up in the mid-palate that keep hold through a nice, 20-second long finish. The tannin quality here is nice, there is good grip and drying but it is well balanced. Overall a really nice wine, far better than what I remember tasting in the past. There is obvious quality here, and this feels more serious than any other Barbera that I have had. Went well with fresh spinach and raspberry salad with vinaigrette. If I had more bottles I wouldn't worry about rushing on them, this seems to be aging nicely.

Impressive. Silky, tasty and persistent. Astonishing the level of this Barbera. Alfieri is a spetacular producer of Barbera. Buy it.
