  • We have had Palari Faro from this year-always nice depth, balance, fruit and finish. The Nerello base has a nice flavor profile. This bottle still was very good, but the fruit is slightly past peak. Have one more bottle; time to drink.

  • Dinner at Bar-a-Thym (Bar-a-Thym): Fairly enjoyable, if just a bit touched by a noticeable rusticity and a slight alcoholic blush. This had a lovely nose that pulled me immediately towards Etna though, with shades of dark plums and cassis seasoned with a good bit of wild brush herb, spice and a nice little blush of volcanic ash and soil. The palate seemed rather bigger than its stated 13.5%, with a round, plush glycerol-laced attack of black plums, cassis and blackberries. This then led to a really charming, idiosyncratic midpalate and finish, with lots of dried herb and a sprinkle of smoky, ashy spice, leading into a slightly drying, woody finish. A touch rustic in feel, but this was both pretty yummy and charming in equal measures.

  • A powerful expression of (mainly) Nerello Mascalese, but not overdone and with a good core of minerality. Lovely.

  • A blend mainly composed of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio with a small addition of local cultivars Acitana, Calabrese (Nero d'Avola), Cappuccio Tignolino, Galatena and Nocera. Aged for a year in oak barrels. 13,5% alcohol.

Deep and moderately translucent cherry red color with developed brick-orange overtones. Complex, sweet-toned and slightly funky nose with sunny aromas of wizened black cherries, some dried figs, a little bit of dusty earth, light oxidative umami notes of soy sauce and meat consommé, bretty hints of leather, farmhouse funk and cloves and a touch of VA. The alcohol lends a slightly gasoline touch to the nose. The wine is full-bodied, rich and quite developed on the palate with sunny flavors of ripe figs, sour cherry bitterness, some wizened dark plums, a little bit of leather and light bretty notes of sweet barnyard funk, a hint of raisin and a tertiary touch of syrupy character. The wine is textural and nicely structured with its moderately high acidity and ripe, ample tannins that slowly pile up on the gums. The finish is moderately grippy, long and slightly warm with rich flavors of sweet dried dates, some tertiary notes of syrupy character and raisins, light leathery tones, a lifted hint of balsamic VA and a touch of boysenberry marmalade.

Just like the last time three years ago, this was a beautiful, complex and just perfectly funky Sicilian red that definitely isn't a modern and polished wine, but neither is it obscenely funky or undrinkably volatile in style either. Wonderfully drinkable with remarkable finesse and elegance with some obvious sense of ripeness and great balance to lend enough freshness and sense of harmony to keep the wine from coming across dull or jammy. Perhaps a bit more evolved and slightly more tired than the previous bottle, but I can't say if it was because of the age or can it be just chalked up to bottle variation. Nevertheless, a unique effort. Highly recommended.

  • Excellent, and sprinkled with moments of sheer excitement. Medium-bodied, darker garnet, soil, red fruit, herbs, minerals, white and purple floral, etc., this is complex, structured, and a joy with food. I've sat on this since just after release, and while the tannins and acids still need some time, the fruit is already there. So, I say drink now or in the next 3-5 years. Very pretty, and glad I opened it for some fellow wine geeks that were unfamiliar with this producer. 13,5% abv., resolved. highly recommended
