  • Outstanding wine. Makes me question whether nerello mascalese should be discussed as one of Italy’s best red wine grapes along with sangiovese, nebbiolo, and aglianico. It offers an exciting bouquet of floral, animal, and fruit aromas and a concentrated but flowing mouthfeel. Exceptional intensity. Revelatory. Unbelievable, really, because I’ve never tasted a Sicilian wine like this.

  • Poured into decanter. Drank after 1 hour and over the next 2 hours.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour with garnet rim. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of sea salt minerality, toasty spice, savoury earth, ripe red cherries, some herbs with more air. Developed.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (13.5%), integrated high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of umami sea salt, toasty spice, savoury earth, ripe red cherries, sour red cherries, leather, licorice. Long finish.
Very good quality. Good balance between fruit and tertiary elements now. Warm ripe feel probably due to the vintage. I find it hard to predict how this will fare with more age. After drinking, I understand why the reviews of this tend to be quite split. Really depends on timing, conditions, and how you take it.
Nerello Mascalese dominant blend, with Nerello Cappuccio, Nocera, Cappuccio Tignolino, Acitana, Galatena and Calabrese making up the rest of the blend.

  • I really liked this. Penetrating, earthy nose. Deep earthy/plummy/cherry flavor. Very long. No tannin left, but the wine was by no means past its prime. I started out saying that I would not pay $70 for this again, but by the end of the bottle I was reconsidering that. Unusual and excellent. Great with pasta.
