  • This wine was definitely a bit over the hill. Perhaps just not a great bottle though this is the second time I have had this wine and both times it was muted and somewhat flabby. I am a huge Aldo Conterno fan - randomly the ‘91 bussia is the one that started it all for me - but this, i just confess, was somewhat underwhelming. I still think there is a lot to enjoy here in terms of old Barolo though. While most of the fruit is just about gone, it isn’t a bottle of vinegar yet. Lots of dried violet and deep tar character going on here. I think if it were served a bit closer to 55-60 degrees fahrenheit - rather than room temperature as it was served at Brentwood’s famous Peppone restaurant - it may have been a bit less rich and flat. Side note, while many of their wines are over the hill, Peppone offers an incredibly selection of old wines at extremely fair prices including large selections from Barolo, Bordeaux, and Napa. If you have any of this left, drink up as this wine probably has only another year or two before it really goes! Excited to try more Aldo Conterno. Overall: 89-
