  • Much better this time around - butterscotch, caramel, hints of lemongrass, yum!

  • mixed feeling about this wine. Scent of oak, ripe banana, peach, caramel - taste of honey, creamy, velvet mouth feel. Having it with home made crab raviolli, which may not be the best match.

  • Vanillin oak sweetness shows with sweet tropical fruits on the nose. However, much more controlled on the palate. Delicious sliightly creamy palate of pineapply yellow fruits. The guy everyone likes but never going to be the star of the show.

  • BYO at Kadoman, a little Japanese restaurant at Circular Road. This was the first vintage with Oliver Crawford (ex Penfolds white winemaker) at Devil's Lair. It's early days yet, but I must say that I far preferred the 2006 version - I thought it had more personality and oomph factor. Something different. This was good, clearly well-made, but a little nondescript. Almost as if it is trying to hard to be stylish. Nose showed vanillin inflections along with some subtle sweet fruit - pineapples, golden kiwi, ripe grapefruit - nothing OTT though, with plenty of flinty, almost smoky mineral pulsing through it. Very nice I thought, rather restrained. Palate was neither here nor there though. Quite big, but well controlled, lots more flinty minerality, some indistinct white and yellow fruit, ripe lemons, nicely shaped, but lacking the focus and precision of say a good Pierro or Leeuwin Art Series. Finish was decent, with a bit more fruit and mineral pushing out. Still young, it would be interesting to see how it develops. I think a couple more years will do it some good, but I am not sure that there is tremendous upside though. All in all, a good wine, but nothing special. Pity - Devil's Lair used to have so much personality to it!
