NOSE: mix of oak and sour red/purple berries; moderately complex; with considerable time in the glass a smoky/earthy note emerges that reminds me of Cote Rotie.

BODY: medium bodied; superfine particulate matter present; garnet-violet color of medium-deep depth.

TASTE: High acidity; spicy oak; very good; nice verve --- it's the acidity and low alcohol (14.2%) that bring me here, I believe; more oak than I'd prefer, but it's really only bothersome on the finish; clean; fruit veered more "purple" as time went on. But for the oak, I'd say drink now or hold, but I do worry about the fruit fading away from its oaken frame, so probably best to Drink Now.

  • Dark color on pouring; lots of fruit on the nose. Some funk initially that blew off after 30 or so minutes. Drank well with grilled beef filet, but we stored half of the bottle under the screw cap in the fridge and saved for day two.

Day two shows a more rounded wine with big fruit, balanced finish. Good job, Larry.

  • With the structure finally catching up to the fruit, this is in a lovely place. Acid driven, tannin in a supporting role, and nicely defined layers of red and blue fruits, citrus, and spicy Syrah undertones. Really delicious, and I'm glad I held one back - I'm pretty impressed with the development in this bottle. As much as I like Larry's wines soon after release, this is a good argument for stashing some away for a while... If I can keep my hands off them.

NB: Lots of sediment in this wine, unusual for Tercero, and caught me and my decanter off guard.

  • Based on the previous reviews I think this is past it's prime. It had a very bold, fruity smell on opening. After a bit in the decanter it was good but not quite on par with where it apparently was before. Taste was only somewhat complex but still pleasant. Wish I hadn't held on so long.

Day 2 - Pulled this out of my wine chiller and it was surprisingly better than when I put it away last night. I liked it a bit less the longer it was out. Wondering if maybe I like this a bit colder than what I would normally drink syrah.
