  • I thought this may have had some Brett (barnyard) notes with fruit just short of pruning. I didn’t like it. I’d drink soon. This continues my feeling that many Spanish wines are overrated and fail to meet the critics’ expectations.

  • Crimson without bricking. Red and black berries perfume, licorice, good acidity, moderated tannin. At 15 years not tired, made from thick skinned berries, one feels the extract in the mouth. Some pepper and minerality.

  • Feels like the very beginning of a good drinking window. Powerful, spicy, stony, energetic, with no oak in sight but a punch of tannin.

  • A couple of hours of air gave substantial rewards. I would guess that it is in its prime drinking window

  • From vintage 2011 onward this has been a 100% Carignan wine, but in 2006 this was a Carignan-Garnacha blend (with a little bit of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah in the mix). Grapes are sourced from a single vineyard located in Gratallops. Aged for 16 months in oak barrels (40-50% new). 14,5% alcohol.

Deep, dark and only slightly translucent blood red color. Brooding, sweet-toned and still quite youthful nose with intense aromas of dark plums, some blackberries, a little bit of savory oak spice, a hint of black pepper and a touch of espresso. The wine is ripe, full-bodied and quite lively on the palate with powerful flavors of sweet black cherries, pronounced stony minerality, some juicy blackcurrants, a little bit of sanguine iron, light boysenberry tones and a hint of savory, woody oak spice. The wine is high in acidity with textural and somewhat grippy medium tannins that slowly pile up on the gums. Wonderfully silky yet chewy mouthfeel. The finish is quite grippy, long and quite powerful with flavors of stony minerality, boysenberries, sanguine iron, some sour cherry bitterness, a little bit of fresh blackcurrant, a hint of toasty oak spice and a touch of black pepper.

A very ripe, intense and still really youthful powerhouse of a wine that shows good balance with the juicy, dark-toned fruit (that's nicely to the fore), oak influence (relatively modest, stays in the background), alcohol (remains well hidden) and sturdy structure. Quite muscular effort, but is slowly resolving into a less brawny direction. Although quite approachable at the moment, the wine really could use some further cellaring. Priced according to its quality at 56€.

(MANYETES Clos Mogador Priorat) 2006 Mogador Dear Friends, Here’s another opportunity that “forces” me to abandon today’s offer (a delightful rose’ from the Duras that deserves space another time) in favor of a deal that is not only low-priced for the genre, but one of the lowest available tariffs for the wine in the world. If you are looking for a palate-staining blend of old and new, one that is sure to make a major impression on your guests, I’ll cut to the chase and make this as short as possible... As far as Priorat is concerned, Clos Mogador is akin to a “Kleenex” icon brand. The consistency of owner Rene Barbier’s output is admirable and few can touch his level of achievement in the region. He’s been called the grandfather of Priorat or the region’s unofficial spokesman but I would simply call him a magician with old-vine Carignan (Carinena). While many top examples have come before it, this year’s Manyetes will only add to Barbier’s resume and he feels the 2006 has a chance to age for up to three decades or more. The material was so strong from this vineyard in 2006 that the freshly pressed grapes stained your fingers for weeks (it was next to impossible to get the pigment off your fingertips). An old wives’ tale ranks the success of a growing season by how long the just-pressed purple lasts on the fingertips and, in this case, a number of pickers had purple on their fingers for three weeks after the harvest – that ranks right up there with the best this vineyard has produced. Call it folklore or real life, the 2006 Manyetes is a serious wine that makes a mineral-soaked statement from the get-go: A bargain compared to similarly styled 2009 Bordeaux? Not to mention, it’s available now. ONE SHIPMENT ONLY at this price directly from the winery cellar. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as a long-term ageing candidate and VERY HARD TO FIND outside of Europe: 2006 Clos Mogador “Clos Manyetes” Priorat - (compare at $80-90+ in the US) FIRST COME FIRST SERVED up to 24/person until we run out To order: niki@garagistewine.com This wine is set to depart form Spain – it will arrive in the summer (please check OARS for local pick up after July 20th).
