  • Dinner at home with Lionel and Rachel (Pine Close): Another 375ml, again quite oxidative, but still pleasurable - this went wonderfully with a roast chicken dish. The nose showed those prematurely aged notes of chicken stock and white meat and brown pears along with a little bready accents and a whiff of honey and caramel. The palate was marked by a savoury, almost salty feel, with more chicken consommé notes and poached browned pear flavours laced with golden honeyed tones. There was still lots of bright acidity keeping the wine zippy, and a nice little hint of lemon zest and mineral at the finish. Still alive and drinking decently then, but clearly going downhill clearly, and very fast as well. Strangely though, on the day, the oxidation actually changed the flavours in such a way that the wine was just a great with our roasted chicken.

  • Drank from a 375ml over dinner with the family at Cafe de HK. This was very advanced, with just a hint of premox to it. It already had a deepening golden hue, and the nose smelt of something far older, with honey and caramel and butterscotch and some notes of cereal and earth. Pretty nice, but there were also disturbing scents of soy sauce, brown pears and browned apples - telltale signs that the wine was starting to go. Thankfully, the palate still had some life to it, drinking a bit fresher than one would have expected after that nose, with sweetly honeyed notes of poached pears, cooked loquats and something apricot-like on the midpalate, all tinged with more of those cereal and oat notes picked up on the nose. There was good depth and well-toned acidity, so that the wine went well with a whole variety of food. Unfortunately, the premix tones showed up again at the finish, with more hints of browned fruits and soy sauce. There was not quite enough in this to say it was flawed, but I do not think it would be fair to give it a rating either. All in all, just hanging on to life by its fingertips, but still giving some enjoyment.

  • Strange things have happened to this wine since I last tasted it - on the one hand the colour has darkened significantly to a golden hue and the wine is much heavier in the mouth. The amazing thing about it was the nose which was delightfully complex with beeswax, butterscotch and toasty honey

  • Dallas 2nd Wednesday Group - August 2012 - In Memory of David White (Suze, Dallas, Texas): WIML90

Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately.

Light yellow to yellow color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose started with a little sulfur followed by notes of ash, talc and yellow pears. Flavors of yellow apples, yellows pears and light mineral notes. Medium acidity, medium body. Drink or hold. I'd lean little more toward drinking now.

  • Coming to the end of its tether but still pleasant drinking giving a light floral palate - not for those that like full-on power Chardonnay (and I don't mean oaky)
