(WEINS-PRUM Graach-Dom Spatlese) Spatlese Dear Friends, This is one of those deals where very little needs to be said - if you enjoy Riesling, the risk here is minimal. 2004 is a vintage of mostly classic stature with the unfortunate circumstance of coming to market just as the fervor over 2005 in Germany was gaining strength. The result is an abnormal amount of top-level 2004 Riesling in the supply chain that should have found a home long ago. What is amazing about the German wine market of the last decade (post-2001) is that a vintage like 2004 in the 1980's would have been considered one of the finest of the decade, on par with 1988. After 2001, it's a new world order for German Riesling and a merely "classic" year like 2004 is not good enough. The amazing thing is that, given a blind line-up of all the post-2001 Kabinett and Spatlese vintages in the Mosel, 2004 would probably be at or near the top with 2002 and 2007. 2005 at this stage would seem heavy, somewhat obtuse and over-concentrated by comparison - more in keeping with what many perceived 2003 to be like. My point is, when you see a bargain like this, the chances are, you are going to like it...and you will probably like it even more at this price, especially if you are a fan of Auslese. Yes, I said Auslese. The 2004 Graacher-Domprobst Spatlese from Weins-Prum follows the rest of this stable in the vintage. Weins-Prum nearly bottled this as an Auslese but decided to keep it as a high-pradikat Spatlese instead. While not a delicate dancer by any means, time has already been very kind to it and it should be even better in 3-6 more years. Full across the palate with an oily, resinous quality of mulled spice and equatorial fruit, this wine has began its long ascension into adolescent complexity and my guess is that it will be at peak if left alone until 2015. If you require the occasional Auslese-esque wine to act as an accompaniment and even as a lighter dessert wine, this will more than fit the bill. This parcel has been impeccably stored since release and is in pristine condition: 2004 Dr. Weins-Prum Graacher-Domprobst Riesling Spatlese It will ship during the Fall shipping season.
