  • One of my "New Year Resolutions" for 2021 is to drink more old wine. Old wine often presents a particular challenge to collectors - the when to open and drink is amplified by how many years one has been carefully (and should I add lovingly?) storing the particular bottle. Opening such a "find" presents a number of problems - not the least of which are "will it hold up to my expectations", "was it worth the wait", "what if it's bad, tired, over the hill?" "what if its amazing but I'm sharing it with the wrong group this evening who won't appreciate it?" and the angst goes on, lol! Then there are the "technical" issues - is the cork OK - can I even pull it out after such a long time (trust me - I have had a lot of issues with wines that are SUPPOSEDLY built to last such a long time - thank you kids for the Christmas present of a Durand wine opener - I guess they finally got tired of my whining, ha.)

Well, this bottle was in great shape, the cork came out without difficulty and the wine, while mature, had evolved into a nicely balanced, savory, mineral, garrigue laden glassful. Almost a hint of raisin on the nose with remembrances of a more exuberant youth and vague but very pleasant dark fruit finish.

I still have a few of his 99's left and over the years they have proven to be a "mixed bag" but my only remaining bottle of the 98's proved to be a big success. Worth the wait.

  • Deep purple. Pepper, dry aged beef, some blackberry, garrigue? Medium to light bodied (for N. Rhone), subdued fruit, secondary flavors peaking out, bit of smoke, medium long finish. Very nice lower end, rustic, N. Rhone. Drink soon.
