  • A bit more high toned than I recall from a prior bottle, but very rewarding, if not “traditional”. Still shows oak but there’s lots of masculine fruit and some herbal notes I like.

  • I have liked the 93s a long time. Many were very enjoyable early, eg after ten years. This one was purchased on release and was drinking better than expected. Cherry and raspberry nose with hints of leather, road tar and rose petals. More on the palate with resolved tannins. Long finish that carried the leather and rose petals quire a ways but ended on a very dry acidic note.

  • A pristine bottle acquired a few years back at auction as part of a cellar that has yet to produce a dud for me. The solid cork came out easily, with barely any seepage. At the ripe old age of 27, all modernist hints were gone, leaving us with a splendid, mature Barolo, slightly lightweight but in a good way, with the acid well-tamed. Clean tar and red fruit notes plus a touch of smoke. Good grip on the finish. A very fine showing.

  • This was in great condition with fill into the neck. Lovely dark red with just a tinge of fading on the rim. Outstanding nose of flowers, cherries, and leather. Opened up after about an hour and softened a great deal after a day (although I preferred day one). A lot of different things going on here with soil, fruit and flowers. A bit acidic on the finish, otherwise I would have rated this even higher. Definitely at peak or just past it, so I would drink up.

  • Beef Night (Palate Sensations, Fusionopolis): I am not a big fan of Clerico’s hypermodern style, but this was not bad at all, with the 20 years or so in the bottle softening its overwrought edges somewhat. It had a nice nose, with thick aromas of sweet red fruits – cherries and raspberries – and then a sprinkle of rose petals and a whiff of smoke, spice and a little earthiness. I found the palate quite yummy. Again, it had a slightly thicker, creamier mouthfeel than the more traditional Nebbiolos that I favour, but it was nicely balanced and structured, with a decent amount of acidity and still chewy tannins framing flavours of sweet black fruit and savoury touches of meat and earth. It was a bit more austere on the finish, showing a typical Barolo bite as it drifted away with a little touch of smokiness. No bad, drinking quite nicely now, especially with a nice hunk of beef, but this could still use another 4-5 years in the bottle, perhaps more.
