This wine has been notoriously inconsistent, particularly several years ago in a tasting with Clive Coats where people having pours from different bottles had widely different opinions of the wine. This was best of them I’ve had: fullish color with browning at the rim; meaty, spicy, gutsy wine; umami richness with loads of dark cherry underlying fruit; tons of life left in this!

This bottle never showed quite the focus for all of the excellent material present. A bit too much oxidation to evaluate properly. Mint, sandalwood, lots of smoked, bloody game aromas and flavors. Sous bois aromas add depth for sure but the nutty character comes through a bit too much. Ample, rich palate with notable, Smokey, peppery tannins. Very salty and minerally in the mouth. Good length. Other bottles have shown great!!

A little somber at first with dark wet wood scents, anitique furniture, dark chocolate, soy sauce and a bit of balsamic aromas. More soil aromas come about with time and reveal some beautiful Christmas spice/nutmeg complexity with a note lilac! Starts off big and broody and then really comes into a more elegant wine; more dimension than meets the eye! I suppose traveling with older wine and getting into the glass takes a bit for the wine to come into focus. It’s good to spend time with these wines. Great richness and complexity. 93-94. I will definitely spend more time with another bottle. Excited to revisit!!

This wine was striking and open for business from the get go. Tertiary, sous bois notes leaped from the glass. More red fruited than the 69 with some mineral notes. Good depth and superb balance of fruit and acidity. Loved the lingering finish. 95 pts.

This wine was tasted at a walk-around Memorial Weekend party. The bottle was kindly provided by Diogo Belo. It was opened and immediately gently poured. Light amber in color, it shows a beautiful, intense bouquet of cocoa, leather, cardamom, tobacco and earth. Light-bodied on the palate, with medium acidity and no residual tannins. The flavors are similar to the nose. The solid middle leads to a smooth, medium-length finish. While this wine is undoubtedly in decline and lacks fruit, it is pleasant nonetheless by virtue of its complexity. Drink now.
