this is a wine made from the residual grapes of the single vineyards rincon and rosemary's. it has a nice, earthy typicity on the nose, and a richly tannic mouthfeel that flows into a finish marred by some tartness. the wine is hollow in the midpalate, and this keeps me from getting too excited about it. decent, but uninspiring.

14.5% alcohol. from grapes that don't make the rincon and rosemary's vineyard designate cuts.
i pulled my case of talley 01 pinots from offsite storage yesterday, and chose this wine tonight to pair with salmon tacos just to drink it up. i have not been satisfied with the 2000 and 2002 representations of this wine, and i recently changed my estate mailing list ordering to include only the vineyard specific wines. well, this example tonight is quite pleasing and a nice surprise. when you purchase by the case, and are an estate customer, the pricing on talley wines remains one of the real bargains from a quality california producer. i think this wine was $30, tops. it's a little oaky, but there is plenty of good pinot characterization combined with nice forest floor/ mushroom notes and a blackberry profile. overall, the wine is reasonably balanced, maintains good acidity, and delivers a lingering finish. this strikes me as good QPR, and is recommended.
