  • bsevern and oakville nailed it. Should have gone in heavier than I did. At 15 years this was a wonderful CF with loads of life left.

  • Long, slow developing large legs, dark garnet in color. Spicy clove raspberry, tobacco leaf, and a green herbal element on the nose. Round, full mouth feel with a dusty chalk thing going on. Chocolate covered raspberry, and slightly tart cranberries, still has a nice tannin structure, with a long slightly tart finish. Interesting wine!

I was concerned that this 2001 bottle would be over the hill, but I must say it's quite a nice surprise, alive and well and drinking far beyond Invino's fire sale prices!

  • Moon Mountain Vineyard, a failed project of Diageo, has been recently sold and rebranded. Fortunately for some of us obscure wine aficionados, the Moon Mountain branded wines were sold off cheaply thru several online wine sites. I bought numerous bottles and (regrettably) consumed them all too early in a hasty desire to taste them. Yet I saved one, the 2001 Cabernet Franc Estate Grown, to pour for friends who are Cabernet Franc lovers.

In sum, it did not disappoint. In fact, it provided evidence for two California wine truisims: (1) That well-made California wines grown in the right areas for the varietal can develop wonderful complexity with age. (2) That Cabernet Franc specifically, given the same conditions, can render superlative and long-lasting red wines.

Of course, the proprietors of the great St. Emilion vineyards have known the latter fact for a long time, despite the rush over the last several decades to concentrate more on the generally less interesting merlot grape. Bottom line: This is a great wine (if you an find it) perfectly in league with any cabernet franc-based bottling, though different, of course, because of its origins.

  • Good rich berry notes. Very smooth. Had this at the winery and it got better. It was a bit past it's prime but still tasty

  • One of my all-time favorite wines, due in part to a wonderful experience at the winery.
