Although this bottle is just entering its period of decline, there is little doubt that the people at Ànima Negra were onto something very special from the moment they revitalised the Callet variety and starting making serious wine with it. The 1999 vintage is far from the best (2001, 2004 and the incredible 2005 come to mind) but it has sufficient poise and originality to stand out as a special wine. The colour displays clear signs of ageing, with a reddish terracotta rim. Rising from the glass, the aromas suggest leather, cloves, plums and tobacco. The tannins have become silky, and the central taste components are a harmonious blend of stewed fruits (plums and apricots) and spices such as cloves and cinnamon. What it has lost in vibrancy and vigour it has gained in softness and complexity. Every mouthful was more interesting than the previous one, as it developed in the glass and bottle.

Drank with friends. Bottle was certainly at the end of its life. The nose was almost unpleasant, although the flavor on the palate was still interesting. Had been told by wine store to drink now, but think the particular bottle may have been a bit long in the tooth.
