  • Nose like the color of the wine, that is to say quite young. I was expecting a fairly evolved wine given that it is a “modest” 1er cru. Like all white Burgundies of this era, I was already wondering if it was going to be alive and well. Well yes, the nose is lively, on honeysuckle, white peach, a trace of very diffuse woodiness and above all a very beautiful minerality which will take over with aeration.

It’s good to have an “old school” Burgundian Chardonnay that doesn’t have these overwhelming toasted aromas or heavy woodiness.

Very fine palate with an attack of white peach and honeysuckle in keeping with the nose. Then, the fine acidity will draw out a juice that is probably not very dense but very delicate. Wet stone, salinity and gunflint follow one another and intertwine to finish with a finish which will gain in amplitude to become almost creamy with this touch of acidity which always brings a nice tension. Good lemony length.

Very good Puligny, a rather intellectual wine that you have to seek out, I will not place it for tasting in the middle of a series of more demonstrative Pulignys.

  • These old Carillon wines are fantastic when they're on -- and this bottle was on. It's truly a style from the olden days, without all the modernist reduction and enamel-stripping acidity. Rounded, plush, with a creamy texture and no overt signs of oak, with yellow fruit and notes of lemon cream rather than juice. Nevertheless, not lacking in acidity or minerality for that matter. Really, the way chardonnay ought to be made.

  • Fun flight of 88, 93, 99 & 2013.
1988: The 88 was still incredibly youthful, in fact so much so that it took quite a while to open up. There is still much upside left for these.
1993: The definition of a "wine in the zone". Perfect in every way, and all you could ask for from this wine. Fantastic, and easily WOTF.
1999: There was a touch of something (let's call it funk vs oxidation) on this bottle. With time though, it really came around (at least for me), and I liked it a lot, particularly with food.
2013: One youngster in the flight, and while maybe not a rock-star, this is a very enjoyable vintage of Carillon Referts. I liked it.

  • Last of 12, opened 20 minutes, perfect cork and level, essentially as last June's bottle, just starting to lose energy, so drink up. F+ (18).......more to it than Friday's Sauzet Combettes 02!

  • 11th of 12, opened 30 minutes, perfect cork and level, previous notes fine plus or very fine (95 - 2013), with 2 flawed bottles, yellow, first signs of maturity; honeysuckle, tropical fruit, white peach, flinty minerality, quite rich; medium, long, persistent and concentrated, pure, lovely dimension to fruit, just beginning to show age though still energetic and with dimension and harmony of a top vintage. F+ (18).
