  • Three wines with Wayne: Popped and poured. A touch of petrol, which increased a little with time, but a very clean, pure bouquet. Pineapple, lemon, gentle spices and a touch of toffee. Wayne guessed the Auslese's vintage as 2001, then 1998, then correctly. Drinking relatively young for its age, but showing evolution. Not over sweet, some of the sugar presumably consumed over the years. Only 9% alcohol. Honey, citric, pineapple and apricot flavours, with a suggestion of botrytis. Glycerol and unctous with plenty of mid palate stuffing. It could have used a little more acid cut, but that's a minor quibble. A lovely wine you could cellar for more development.

  • Late-Night Cellar-Raid (Extra Space, Singapore): Excellent. I had quite forgotten having had this at about the same time last year. From a 375ml, this bottle was every bit as good as when I last tried it though. It had a lovely Rheinhessen fruit-orchard of a nose, from red apples, to peached and nectarines, and then more tropical scents of rambutan and pineapples, all laced with a bit honey and just that slightest hint of slatey mineral aromas. I really liked the palate too. It was blessed with a lovely freshness and nice, juicy citrus acidity to its rich flavours of honeyed pineapples, white plums and rambutans touched with brighter tones of grapefruit, lime and a rub of orange peel. There was clearly some botrytis on this given its creamily textured, lightly honeyed undertones, but it was all so light-footed and fresh as it tripped its was into a deliciously bright, precise finish. A yummy wine. It may not have had the purity and verve of the strongest vintages in this vineyard, but it was nevertheless an excellent Riesling in its own right.

  • Pinots, Riesling, Dim Sum and Duck (Asia Grand, Odeon Towers): This was probably my favourite wine of the day, not only for the fact that it was drinking wonderfully, but also for how versatile it was with a whole range of dim sum dishes. It had a beautiful nose. Little touches of kerosene framed aromas of rich nectarine, apricots, dried figs and some lemon candy scents. Really nice, but the palate was even better. Still very rich and powerful for a wine of its age, it filled the mouth with a creamily texture streamd of Riesling goodness - nectarines, apricots, peach, dried flowers, everything perfectly integrated and balanced, flowing into a long, full, yummy finish with honeyed tones adding a golden glow. Quite beautiful, with Rheinhessen fruitiness wed to a nice core of acidity that made the wine a great foil for our food.
