This is an old fashioned and rather extractive expression of Hunter shiraz. The nose reeks of tarry roads, fennel, aniseed and blackberry. The palate is rich with plenty of blackberry, plum and fruit cake fruit and more than sufficient acid to support its savoury length. The wine settled down in the glass after one hour but I believe it to be over oaked and picked too ripe and is reminiscent of when the Hunter winemakers tried to emulate the big and bold Barossa shiraz wines of that era. The more recent expressions are more medium bodied and better for it.
Aged Hunter fun (Frank's place in Matraville): Dense, slightly reductive, plums, cream, vanilla, a little prune, quite rich, nose. Juicy, spiced, plenty of plummy and pruny fruit, tannins are grainy, drying, the fruit carries long, very long in fact. Still quite youthful.

Has developed complex flavours ( herbs, dusty earth, leather, spices). Very interesting, but let down by acid and alcohol not in balance.
