This wine is not all about the hedonistic fruit. It hits first with a funky nose of aged beef and earth. Of course I won't say that a 2001 Barossa Shiraz does not have tons of ripe fruit, but this wine aims for more complexity. I say "aims for" because the profile seems a little contrived, as though generated by the winemaker, rather than any particular aspect of the sites. In distinction to great wine, this wine struggles to merge the complex aromas with the fruit, which is a tad simple. I'd give the wine a year in bottle to see what happens.
