  • Monthly Tasting Group: Rieslings (Ngon Bistro, St. Paul, MN): Small taste. This was singing. Ripe, bright, tropical fruits, nice body, vanillin on the finish. 92+ to 93pts.

  • The first challenge was to actually get the wine opened. The cork had some mold under the capsule, but that's not that uncommon for the leaker German bottles. The cork on this one had really lost its structure, all soft and spongy so the pull just got out shreds and the Durand couldn't get a good grip on it without pushing it in. So in it went and one coffee filter into a decanter later we were back in business. Good news was the wine underneath was in very good condition. Racy, vibrant sweetness. Decadent for a Spat but not cloying. Pale golden coloring, light honey notes on golden delicious apple. Not at all reductive, plush and full flavor profile while still being lightweight in mouthfeel. Paired with the '01 version (which was a full 2pts higher in alc content at 10.5% vs. 8.5% on the '04) and that was a fun study in contrasts. The '01 was more refined and balanced/nuanced (a special bottle, and my fav of the pair) while the '04 was loud and proud. A treat to try at this age. My last from this vintage but I think well stored bottles would have years of good drinking ahead given the composition

  • I agree with Salil, this does drink like a Auslese. It does have some complexity but I did find the sweetness distracting. Acid was medium plus, maybe it should have been high. Had it with a Mexican Cemita and it did help tame the spice of the chipotle and balance the saltiness of the cecina. The sweetness does make it hard to pair with most non-spicy foods though. As far as the nose it isn't shy. There is a slight petrol note that goes away quite quickly, lemon, chalk and river rocks. It is light on the palate, its sweetness is pronounced but it finishes dry. Good wine, just not crazy about it.

  • Liked this a lot, though it certainly doesn't hit the heights of a HGS era Bürgergarten Spätlese. (Perhaps drinking the '01 #2134 in the same week was a bit unfair.) This is remarkably sweet and intense on the palate - much more like an Auslese, and there's a noticeable tropical fruited character with some Scheu-like mango and papaya notes amongst the ripe citrus and apple fruit. There's good acidity here and it's very well balanced (and a great match with spicy jerk chicken), but it never shows the level of depth or complexity that I've found the Hans-Gunther era wines so consistently achieved.
