  • stored in a temperature controlled cellar since release, the wine has held its color and Petite Sirah plummy flavors. More complex than most, with its tannins melted away. Much of its acidity had gone as well, holding my rating to 91... in line with the CT average.

  • From a magnum - with a real cork! I was amazed - this wine is going strong. Bold wine, alcohol fully integrated, a touch of barnyard on the back end.

  • This is one of the better B&H I've had over the last few years. As always, one has to go in knowing that you'll be subject to a high-alc bruiser with some heat on the back-end. Still, this particular bottle balanced it better than most, and I was pleasantly surprised that this is still going strong after 18 years since inception. Drink or hold another 5 years.

  • Oh my, now I get it. My previous bottle was a big disappointment, probably because my expectations were high. Maybe it's just that I have low expectations for this final bottle ... but it's beautiful. Like a different wine altogether compared to the previous one. Unlike the faded, one dimensional quaff the last one was - this one has layers and nuance and plenty left. (Crazy - because they were both purchased on release from the winery, and cellared in identical conditions.)

On the PNP, it brings deep berry fruits right up front (maybe even some blueberry?) but then transitions into some smoky stuff through the middle (is this what coal tastes like?). Still carries a 30 second or longer finish. Well balanced. It's got just a touch of heat on the back end, or I'd rate it higher.

Curious to see how this one evolves with some air; and how it does with the flat iron steak that's in progress.

  • Not sure what to think. This bottle was certainly acceptable, even very good. Based on CT notes, I was afraid it was WAY past the drinking window, but it was still fine. But (and here's the big "but") ... it was just fine. I vaguely remember the original Parker review on this one - and I'll yet track it down - was that this was stunning and would last more or less forever. I also think I had to buy it on allocation from the winery's mailing list. So in that context, it's a bit disappointing, really. It's one dimensional, still balanced, but simple. If this was a $12 CDR, I'd think it was pleasantly good. I guess I was expecting a lot more from this one. I have one left and I won't wait long to drink it, the age hasn't seemed to make this one any better. Your mileage may vary ....
