Vertical of Beausejour Duffau Lagarrosse vs Canon vs selected pirates 2005-2020. Main takeaways : i/ Canon trumps Beausejour overall, especially in more recent ones. ii/ Canon tends to be lighter-footed, more delicate while Beausejour is typically more extracted and ripe. iii/ St Emillion clearly struggles with the hotter vintages a few years on with 2005 the low-light, already exhibiting beef juice elements. iv/ best wines were Canon 2015 (95), 2019 and 2020 (94 each). Tasting note:
Ripe and extracted, but also polished fruit of red cherry with darker accents. Pronounced top notes of violets. Nice mineral base of graphite along with wet earth. Grainy tannin, decent presence and moderately soft texture with good length finish. Gains in intensity with aeration. A decent 2011 for the estate and in fact one of the better showings of it in this line-up.

  • 2011 Château Canon 92 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Fresh red berry fruit of cherry and raspberry, grassy herbal aromas, a floral overlay and mineral notes of cold rock – all stacks up into nice verticality. Also develops smoke flavors with time. Intensity however rather low (medium-minus). The palate felt slightly shallow due to a lack of mid-palate and came across somewhat off-balance. Otherwise enticing and attractive.

  • 2005 Château Canon 87 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Vertical of Beausejour Duffau Lagarrosse vs Canon vs selected pirates 2005-2020. Summary of wines and scores included in the tasting story.

    Tasting note:
Ripe and rather extracted for Canon. The fruit profile was skewed towards darker berries. Also whiffs of what appeared to be borderline soy sauce. Underneath earth and mineral layers as well as leathery and oaky toast notes. On the palate a somewhat cooked fruit, Maggi notes and austere tannins building a rustic backbone. The low-light of the Canons in the line-up.

  • 2010 Château Canon 90 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Vertical of Beausejour Duffau Lagarrosse vs Canon vs selected pirates 2005-2020. Summary of wines and scores included in the tasting story.

    Tasting note:
Ripe red berry, decent level of extraction, floral top notes of roses, a bit of earth and leather, mineral layer of iodine. Fresh acidity, slightly chewy but otherwise soft tannins. However the fruit here felt slightly overripe and cooked. My impression was there’s not much farther to go here even though the structure would warrant more long term aging.

    Tasting note:
Medium plus intensity. Red and blue berries, herbal and vegetal notes of dry hay and green tea, Maybe some green bell pepper in the mix, too. Riper fruit on the palate, mouthcoating tannin but decent balance otherwise. Notably better today than in the 10-years on tasting.

    Tasting note:
Extracted and very ripe fruit with roasted coffee notes. Only hints of, but still perceptible, Maggi notes. Not consistently at first, but becoming more dominant with time. The palate felt disjointed, incredibly drying tannin - to an extent it‘s hard to keep the juice in the mouth. The low light of the Canon line-up.

    Tasting note:
Sexy ripe red berry fruit with floral top notes, but also vegetal elements such as asparagus, a bit of iodine. More extracted on the palate but still with sufficiently fresh features. Rather drying tannin which didn’t quite manage to balance the acidity. Saline finish.

    Tasting note:
Right out of the gate beef juice notes, otherwise (over-)ripe red berry fruit, faint earthy and mineral notes. The palate adds a some fresher elements of fruit , but couldn’t quite shake off the beef juice. Drying tannin. Felt more like a 2009.

Summary of wines and scores included in the tasting story.

    Tasting note:
Light, precise and linear fruit. Fleshy and floral elements and a waxy, linoleum-like complexity. Feels light-footed which is mirrored by a light and juicy palate with a soft and caressing texture. Note: maybe not the best bottle as some in the group felt that there was a minor cork taint – but I couldn’t spot it. For me a consistently good vintage for the estate since release.

    Tasting note:
Red cherry with elements of blueberries and minor coffee notes. Rather extracted fruit in the end, unfortunately. Some earth and leather, but also minor nail polish after a bit of air. Nicely polished palate, in good balance with fresh acidity and structural tannin. Decent overall, but worried about minor nail polish…

  • 2018 Château Canon 92 Points

Summary of wines and scores included in the tasting story.

    Tasting note:
Sweet red cherry fruit along with sugar coated berries and a fine mineral layer. Palate with a soft texture, but lower aromatic intensity and lack of presence with a short to medium finish. The 2018 Canon is a weird animal and I struggle to wrap my head around it. It was highly promising from barrel, overripe and disjointed freshly bottled, then beautiful and seductive 5 years on and now rather mediocre.

    Tasting note:
Ripe fruit of red cherries with marginal Kirsch notes. Herbal paste floral notes, although the latter appeared somewhat soapy. The palate slightly thin, but with decent balance. A good wine but you’re left thinking there could have been more.

Summary of wines and scores included in the tasting story.

    Tasting note:
Ripe cherry fruit, but with low intensity. Ripeness was borderline over-extracted, in fact. The palate better with still ripe and fleshy fruit, good balance and length. With aeration however the fruit gained in sweetness and intensity, also adding note of perfume. This would likely benefit from a decent decant at this stage.

    Tasting note:
Light, even if somewhat riper red berry fruit. Mineral layer, but in the background. Sweet and fresh, fleshy red cherry on the palate, adding precision and weight. Structural tannin, finely grained, and racy acidity. A pleasant Canon, but maybe not in an ideal spot right now. Would hold off for a few years.

    Tasting note:
Cherry fruit with elements of Kirsch, but not much else going on. There were various votes for cork taint in the group, but for me somewhat ambiguous on the nose. However, much more clear on the palate – here it was clearly corked.

    Tasting note:
Sweet and ripe yet fresh and sexy red berry fruit. Cooler mineral notes create tangible breadth to the aroma profile. A fresh fruit on the palate, great balance with seamlessly integrated tannin already today, only later in the finish feeling slightly grainy. Promising – especially as the fruit no longer came across as extracted as when freshly bottled in 2021.

Notes of black coffee, red berry fruit - light and fresh with minimal extraction it seems. Maybe a feature of dried herbs, too. More extracted on the palate and slightly coarse tannin.

    Tasting note:
Red and dark cherry fruit, black coffee, mineral notes and an element of spice as well as fresh herbs. Unfortunately also minor notes of nail polish here and there, especially with increasing temperature. Still promising overall, but the palate is rustic with coarse tannin and wild acidity, lacking integration. Plenty of substance, but will need time to come around.

Cherry fruit and Kirsch, maybe some dried flowers. Also herbs and mineral base notes. The palate simple with a focus on fruit. Grippy tannin and blurry acidity. Best kept cellaring for a few years, but could emerge nice pretty then.

  • 1955 Château Beausejour (Duffau Lagarrosse) 93 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Tasted as a goodie as part of a vertical. Hazy color. Plenty of sous-bois and forest floor along with malty complexity. Sweet fruit, with apricot confit complementing the raspberry fruit. The palate has thinned out a bit, lacking structure and density, but with still fresh fruit and a nice base of tertiary aromas.
