  • Canon vs. Duffau-Lagarrosse 2009-2020 tasted blind (Fribourg): Dark garnet. Very ripe nose, overripe prunes, cooked fruit. Very unpleasant aromatic profile, like Banyuls wine almost. On the palate the over-ripeness continues. Both 2018 wines were far too ripe for my palate, but Canon just escaped it being completely overdone.

  • Vertical of Canon vs Beasejour Duffau Lagarrosse (Fribourg): Vertical of Beausejour Duffau Lagarrosse vs Canon vs selected pirates 2005-2020. Main takeaways : i/ Canon trumps Beausejour overall, especially in more recent ones. ii/ Canon tends to be lighter-footed, more delicate while Beausejour is typically more extracted and ripe. iii/ St Emillion clearly struggles with the hotter vintages a few years on with 2005 the low-light, already exhibiting beef juice elements. iv/ best wines were Canon 2015 (95), 2019 and 2020 (94 each). Summary of wines and scores included in the tasting story.

    Tasting note:
Red cherry with elements of blueberries and minor coffee notes. Rather extracted fruit in the end, unfortunately. Some earth and leather, but also minor nail polish after a bit of air. Nicely polished palate, in good balance with fresh acidity and structural tannin. Decent overall, but worried about minor nail polish…

  • One big coravined glass drank over roughly two hours. This wine is straight up fire. Showy but at the same time elegant. Even though everything is still a bit shy and very tightly packed there are layers and layers of aromas and flavors. Black fruit, licorice tons of spices and what not. The wine has tons of structure but every sip reveals new things. Very concentrated with beautiful sweet velvety tannins and a very spicy finish that lasts almost a minute. The wine is already super approachable especially if you like your wines on the younger side. 96-98. This is amazing especially given the price point. Looking forward to open this bottle very soon and finish it all by myself 🤪.

  • Wow this is good, it was tight upon opening but after 4-5 hours in a decanter this came around. Bright cherry, cassis, spice box, chocolate, silky mouthfeel and weightless yet powerful. This will most likely demand a higher scores in 5 years.

  • Deep ruby

Nose: Forest berries, mesquite, violet, iron, light smoke.

Mouth: A broad cassis core, tinged with light mesquite notes has center stage, leading a lighter midpalate of sweet black cherry, plum paste, black tea, anise and dried black tobacco. Fruit is weightless in the mouth, just floating across, as a mineral ending to the midpalate allows the fruit to return just briefly before fading.

Overall: Svelte, generous and still balanced, this is lightly lush in feel with velveteen palate action, showing understated luxury in its overall feel. Really finessed. Drink 2022 - 2037.

    96.
