Friday, May 3, 2024 - Sometimes California chardonnay surprises me with how good it is. This is one of those times. Deep, subtle lemon smell along with a bed of white summer flowers. I moved it to a cabernet glass to get more air and more smell because it’s just lovely. A little bit of salt spray and marble. In the mouth an explosion of flavor. Lemon confit - big flavors but not too sharp or intense. A tiny bit of smokiness and minerality. Lengthy finish and that is where the only part I don’t like comes in - a bit of reductive note. I’m not much of a blind taster with chardonnay but I would have picked this as French and likely Montrachet. Unlike most Cali chardonnay and not resembling the many lovely Oregon chardonnay I’ve enjoyed. Good stuff - nice surprise. But the note above is based on just sipping the wine - with food it became aggressively acidic and off-puttingly sharp. Second glass was back to just sipping and it was better, but that was a weird turn of events.
