  • 1994 Pahlmeyer Merlot

Still surprisingly good - a little hollow in the middle, but nothing that would suggest the wine is flawed in any way. Had to use a Durand to extract the soft cork, but enjoyed the wine. Any time you can drink a wine 30 years old and it’s not off, flawed, over the hill, you have to feel pretty good. So I feel good about this.

First time with Teroldego grape - and it’s exceptionally yummy. Bright red flavors of cherry and pomegranate with fuzzy, grippy tannins. Moderate acidity. Excellent flavors and long finish.

Sometimes California chardonnay surprises me with how good it is. This is one of those times. Deep, subtle lemon smell along with a bed of white summer flowers. I moved it to a cabernet glass to get more air and more smell because it’s just lovely. A little bit of salt spray and marble. In the mouth an explosion of flavor. Lemon confit - big flavors but not too sharp or intense. A tiny bit of smokiness and minerality. Lengthy finish and that is where the only part I don’t like comes in - a bit of reductive note. I’m not much of a blind taster with chardonnay but I would have picked this as French and likely Montrachet. Unlike most Cali chardonnay and not resembling the many lovely Oregon chardonnay I’ve enjoyed. Good stuff - nice surprise. But the note above is based on just sipping the wine - with food it became aggressively acidic and off-puttingly sharp. Second glass was back to just sipping and it was better, but that was a weird turn of events.

2/18/2023 3:13:00 PM - I don’t even buy CA wines anymore. Just France, Italy & Spain mostly. CA Cabs now you don’t even know what you’re getting besides idiotic prices. Cheers
