  • 2022 BloodRoot Ramble Proprietary Red

I'm going to plagiarize a certain secretive wine purveyor as the description is pretty spot on...but will add that it's a great QPR with excellent acidity framing a long finish: "...this juicy red blend leads with Cabernet Sauvignon supported in diminishing order by Grenache, Syrah, Sangiovese, Merlot, Tannat, and Mourvèdre...Imagine deep dark lush fruit on the nose with hints of spice and bay. On the palate, silky-smooth texture that is utterly charming. Notes of bright cherry, currant, and plum play perfectly with forest, cedar, and herb."

  • NV Varozza Vineyards 931

First off, full disclosure: I'm a huge fan of petite sirah and have been following Varozza PS for 15+ years. The oldest bottles I currently have are 15-25 year-old Varozza PS and German Rieslings as they last longer than anything else.

With that said, this purportedly is a blend of 2015 PS, 2015 Cab, and 2017 Zin. While it tastes like it has some age, it has years left. The winemaker's notes are spot-on: dark roasted coffee, blackberry with blueberry compote, and cocoa framed by a slightly bitter tannin structure I consider a hallmark of Varozza. I'd definitely buy again.

  • 2020 Beau Vigne Cabernet Sauvignon Cult

Nothing special and definitely not worth anything north of $50. This already tastes slightly thin and I can't quite decide if the echoes are spicy oak or actual smoke. Not for the cellar; drink immediately. Not a fan given what I paid for it from a certain agent who sold this as an NDA "cult" wine (I is dum).

Sidenote: the Beau Vigne winery is long gone. Julien Fayard is a super-talented winemaker, but to pretend this is anything resembling the original BV estate production borders on deception.
