    Kleur: Diep donkerrood. Aroma / bouquet: Aangenaam, donker bouquet. Een bouquet met vooral geconfijte kers, gronderige accenten, champignons. Smaak / Afdronk: Dik, romig sap. Een licht gebrek aan frisheid en zuur. De 14,5% alcohol wordt daarom in bedwang gehouden door stoere tannines. Serieus lange afdronk met een subtiel maar streng bittertje in de finale. Algemeen / potentieel: Stoere 'tweede Bond', maar met een beperkte complexiteit en - na 11 jaar - iets te veel hoekigheid... 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 11 + Smaak / Afdronk: 16 + Algemeen / potentieel: 8 = 90/100

    Colour: Deep dark red. Aroma / bouquet: Pleasant, dark bouquet. A bouquet with mainly candied cherries, earthy accents, mushrooms. Taste / Aftertaste: Thick, creamy juice. A slight lack of freshness and acidity. The 14.5% alcohol is therefore held in check by sturdy tannins. Seriously long finish with a subtle but severe bitterness in the final. General / potential: Tough 'second Bond', but with limited complexity and - after 11 years - a little too much angularity... 50 + Color: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 11 + Taste / Aftertaste: 16 + General / potential: 8 = 90/100

Smaak / Afdronk: Een voor Amerikaanse Bordeaux-blends gebruikelijke, iets beperkte, zuurgraad. Dik-sap, geconcentreerd. Aangenaam krachtige, stoere tannines. Tannines net iets te 'groenig' en is de associatie met 'groene paprika' net iets te prominent. Maar dat is dan ook het enige puntje van kritiek op deze wijn. Indrukwekkend lange afdronk. Algemeen / potentieel: 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 12 + Smaak / Afdronk: 15 + Algemeen / potentieel: 8 = 90/100

    Kleur: Helder robijnrood met een wat bredere rand. Aroma / bouquet: De eerste indruk: zacht zoetig rood fruit, aardbeiencompote,. gemberkoek, verfijnd hout. Voor SQN een iets beperkte complexiteit. Smaak / Afdronk: Geweldig verleidelijke SQN, zoals gebruikelijk. Mondvullend en geconcentreerd, dik-sappig, maar ook in de mond iets minder complexiteit dan waarop ik bij SQN inmiddels reken. Serieus lange, romige afdronk. Algemeen / potentieel: 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 11 + Smaak / Afdronk: 16 + Algemeen / potentieel: 8 = 90/100

    Colour: Bright ruby red with a somewhat wider edge. Aroma / bouquet: The first impression: soft sweet red fruit, strawberry compote. gingerbread, refined wood. Slightly limited complexity for SQN. Taste / Aftertaste: Wonderfully seductive SQN, as usual. Mouth-filling and concentrated, thick and juicy, but also slightly less complexity in the mouth than I now expect from SQN. Seriously long, creamy finish. General / potential: 50 + Colour: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 11 + Taste / Aftertaste: 16 + General / potential: 8 = 90/100

Curiously, I generally do not like the "typical Cali Style wines" with more ripeness, extraction and higher alcohol (or such from the "old world" either as has become the case all too often in CdP and some Bordeaux properties for example). My style preference is for bright acidity and just ripe grapes that generate wines in the 12,5%-14% range rather than 14,5-16% monsters. Shall I say more "feminine" wines rather than "masculine" ones? With regard to Burgundy being helped by climate change, I have heard several winemakers in France suggest so, including Jean-Nicolas Méo of Méo-Camuzet (and Nicolas-Jay in Oregon). It isn't the good years that it has helped, rather the bad years, in that there are fewer under-ripe vintages. i.e the vintages are more consistent. I have noticed this in the last decade or so. I think they do worry that in the future they may have trouble keeping the balance of ripeness and acidity, but so far they have been able to pick earlier and still make classic wines in the warmer vintages. On another subject... I have a branch of our family in Northern Holland...my last name is Poiesz... and I hope to visit when the pandemic has run its course. If so I would be honored to share a bottle of wine with you. Should you find the opportunity in the future to visit the NYC area, I am a short car ride away in New Jersey and would offer the same to you here. Cheers!
