  • 2020 Forge Cellars Cabernet Franc Willow Vineyard

Prior bottle was 22 months ago and my notes were roughly consistent, but this bottle was a small step down from my prior one. Black and red cherry notes on the nose as well as a good amount of spices and some earth notes as well. Medium bodied with a mixture of black and red cherry, but not quite as open or expressive as previously. Tart cherry, spices, earth, tannins and acidity on the back. Structural qualities seemed a bit more dominant here than in my prior bottle, even after being open for 2+ hours. I'll plan to open another bottle later this year and confirm if this is a temperature thing, a time open thing, if the wine is simply in an odd place or if this truly is where the wine is today.

  • 2019 Hermann J. Wiemer Riesling Magdalena Vineyard

Prior bottle was 2 and a half years ago and this bottle was a noticeable step down; I'm hoping negative bottle variation. Nose showed mostly white orchard fruit and citrus. There were not tropical notes and in wasn't nearly as pretty and expressive as it had been previously. Medium bodied white apple, some pear and light peach the primary fruit notes. There's an undercurrent of citrus, but not quite as vibrant as the 2018. Acidity and other tart notes on the back. But even when warm, there were essentially no tropical notes to speak of and the wine didn't seem to have as much density as previously. Given how long lived this wine typically is and my (up until now) consistent notes on this vintage, I suspect negative bottle variation, or some sort of minor flaw. I'll plan to open another bottle, possibly in June and confirm. The wine certainly wasn't in bad shape, just very different from my prior impression in a way I don't think additional age explains.

  • 2018 Hermann J. Wiemer Riesling Magdalena Vineyard

Prior bottle was 3 years and four months ago and this wine has evolved positively, along the lines I'd hoped. Pear and melon on the nose initially, showing more white apple and some floral notes as it warms. Medium bodied with white apple upfront, moving to white peach through the middle. Tropical notes remain highlights as opposed to the 2016 where they were more distinct. Also, while this 2018 shows good mid-body roundness, it's a clear step behind the 2016 in terms of density. Backside shows citrus (especially lemon), pear and acidity. There's a very pleasant undercurrent of citrus/lemon throughout this wine that both distinct and different from the 2016. It does allow the wine to feel slightly more fresh and defined and should aid in providing a long life. I will try to wait for Q1 2025 for my last bottle.

10/14/2023 4:49:00 AM - I have a quick question, since you seem to be a lover of Antica Terra as well. I'm sitting on a few magnums of 2012 Ceras, Botanica and Antikythera, and am wondering when to drink them. Would you reckon Botanica is ready to drink the fastest, followed by Ceras and then Antikythera?

8/5/2022 7:07:00 AM - Hey, i've been following your FLX tasting notes for quite some time and greatly appreciate them. I've fallen in love with the region over the past several years and am always looking for new content, which is often very limited (although I think that's also part of the fun)! Let me know if you'd ever like to connect and correspond about FLX (or any other wine region for that matter). Will be heading back up to the region a little over a week from now and am excited to get my first taste of the 2021 vintage. Kind regards, Bryan B

7/13/2019 4:01:00 AM - Hi RGCM Gananda, Thanks for your comment. I will look for the new Forge releases. I live in the Finger Lakes of NY. I have not visited the winery yet, but often buy at Red Feet, a wine shop owned by the wife of one of the Forge partners. Melzar
