  • 2020 Badenhorst Family Wines Cinsault Ramnasgras

Single vineyard old vines on granite soil. Organic. Whole bunch fermentation in old oak vats and it matures there for 1 year. Light, transparent color. A bit of reduction on the nose with lots of floral and red fruit. A bit earthy and spicy on the nose and palate. Light-bodied and soft. Red berry fruit and candied watermelon up front with some savory soy, minerally finish. Medium+ length. Not much midpalate and medium-low acid, but the subtle lingering savory notes gives it some framing at the end and it goes down so quickly over the palate to not dwell on what it lacks. It's not supposed to be a blockbuster and like many Cinsault, the nose outperforms the palate, but there's a Burgundy aspect to this wine overall. Low alcohol at 11.5%

  • 2021 TerraMater Sangiovese Gran Reserva

14 months in barrel, but I doubt much if any was new oak. The nose is spicy though: cinnamon, baking spice, dried herbs, tobacco. The palate starts with dark fruit, but finishes with tangy red fruit, moderate-light tannins, and medium length and body. Balanced, good intensity but a bit rustic, The closest Chilean Sangiovese I’ve had to Tuscan Sangiovese, like Chianti. It’s best with food like pizza or pasta with a tomato sauce just like Tuscan Sangiovese.

  • 1996 Joël Taluau Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil Vieilles Vignes

Unoaked. Cabernet Franc planted in 1934. Medium+ body but smooth feel at this stage. Dark berries. Very vegetal and earthy on the nose. Medium+ acid. Some tannins but they’re ripe and soft. Still fresh. Everyone thought it was a young wine. Just mild bricking so it wasn't obvious. No tertiary notes yet. Shows traditional, pre-global warming green notes in Loire Valley, but it's still ripe green notes that are well integrated and mostly on the nose compared to the palate. 91+

7/2/2022 8:14:00 PM - Your website is AWESOME! Next time you're in the Bay Area, please stop by my art studio in San Mateo. I paint with only the finest examples of the world's vitus vinifera, and would love to paint your portraits with you favorite cuvee. I loved your article on wine aged in the sea. Stay in touch.

6/6/2020 5:51:00 PM - Thanks LaiJien. I see you're a fan of Bedrock. I finally bought some of their single vineyard heritage wines to try. Also I see you have plenty of Washington State wines, which makes sense since you're in Seattle. Chilean reds aren't too different from Washington State reds although it's been a while since I've had a wine from Washington. Hard to find in Chile. Please let us know what you'd like to see more of in our blog.

6/6/2020 4:55:00 PM - Welcome, Wine Diplomats! Nice website. I know very little about Chilean wine (just that it's a really good value, I've heard), and I'm looking forward to reading more about it from you. Salud!
