This is an astonishing wine. I detected a fair bit more oxidation than the last bottle but sufficient freshness remains. It is incredibly complex and provocative.

An aromatic explosion on the nose with wonderfully extravagant, tangy apricot-driven fruit. So complex and expressive with judicious oak and some almond paste. On the palate as captivating as they come with downright addictive, massively hedonistic ripe fruit. Large-scaled with terrific drive and power. At its peak, quite savory but has not dried up at all. Combines high levels of ripeness and concentration with incredible freshness resulting in a singular experience.

Moderately deep bronze color. Dry, quite developed and ridiculously complex nose with savory aromas of saffron, hay, some wizened red apples, a little bit of ripe white peach, light floral notes of apple blossom, a hint of beeswax and a sharp, aldehydic touch of green apples and chopped almonds. The wine is dense, ripe and concentrated on the palate with more medium than full body and savory flavors of peach, creamy oak, some developed nutty tones, a little bit of stony minerality, light aldehydic notes of curry and tangy salinity, a hint of marzipan and a touch of poached pear. Layers upon layers of flavors. A great combination of tactile, oily mouthfeel, sense of density and fresh acidity. The finish is long, complex and somewhat tertiary with layered flavors of wizened peach and ripe apricots, some tangy salinity, a little bit of developed nuttiness, light green apple tones, a hint of saffron-driven exotic spice and a touch of cooked cream.
An extraordinary Condrieu caught right in the perfect shape. Developed and getting tertiary, but not one least bit too old. Incredibly complex with layered, savory flavors, counterpointed by ripe, sweet-toned fruit. Peaking right now and while the wine might keep good for several years more, there is definitely no need to age it any further. Outstanding stuff, easily the most impressive wine in our Condrieu tasting. Truly an experience.

In a lovely place now, still some representative peachy fruit up front but also minerality and tension. The alcohol possibly just sticks out a tiny bit at the back of the finish but a truly complex and interesting wine.

Summer 2016. In order to prove or disprove the old saying that you drink Condrieu young and Ch Grillet old(er), I served blind Verney's Vernon 04 next to Grillet 04.
The contrast could not have been greater. To think these wines were made within 5 kms of each other from the same grap in the same year. On the colour alone, one looked 20 years older than the other. The Grillet shone brightly, the Vernon was a mess and clearly well past its peak.
