The Roaring 20s

  • 1920 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair La Romanée - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Romanée Grand Cru
Amazing dark color for its age. Nose started with great spice combo of anise and cinnamon followed by ripe red fruit and some slightly unusual Bordeaux-like (not meant as an insult) cigar box aromas. Ripe fruit followed through on the palate. Wow! Long finish, lots of spice. (96 pts.)
  • 1929 Rolland Boyer Clos Vougeot - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Still alive and breathing, if not kicking. Forest floor all over the nose with some spice hints. Mostly the same on the palate with remnants of seemingly very ripe fruit as well. Finish was also mostly earthy with some discernible acidity. (87 pts.)

1947 Hot, Hot, Hot Vintage

  • 1947 Maison Albert Bichot Charmes-Chambertin - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Really impressive combination of sous bois and ripe red fruit on both nose and palate. Interesting ripeness still remains - I think 1947 was supposed to have been the hottest vintage ever. Hints of spice on palate but they seem to have mostly faded into the wine's earthy charm. Some spice comes out on the finish. (93 pts.)
  • 1947 Domaine Louis Remy Chambertin - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
More interesting than enjoyable, this was all mushroom with hints of spice and shadows of black fruit. My first thought is that I'm told few 1947s have survived well because of the difficulty making wine in what was considered the hottest Burgundy vintage of the century. But a second bottle at the other table was allegedly far better than what we tried. Note: what was formerly Remy's holdings in Chambertin is now Domaine Leroy's holding. (89 pts.)

Some Babies

  • 1969 Domaine Château De La Tour Clos Vougeot - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Lots of red fruit, spice and power. Clearly a tannic wine in its youth, this probably just recently integrated into a lovely, balanced wine. Secondary character is really start starting to emerge, and in glass fruit slowly softened and mushroom became more prominent. (91 pts.)
  • 1971 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
From jeroboam. Incredible nose of rose petals, cinnamon, nutmeg, and concentrated mushrooms along with persistent red fruit. Red fruit leads the charge on the palate, equally matched with classic sous bois and good spice. Everything seems in perfect harmony with this wine right now. Crisp acidity comes out on the very long finish adding even more texture. Certainly my favorite wine tonight in an amazing lineup. Quite possibly the best wine I have ever had. (98 pts.)
