 11/27/2012 (Medlar, Chelsea, London)

Seven us brought some of our best burgundies, and very lovely they were too. The reds were surprisingly similar, all showing red fruits, silky textures and exhibiting a restrained grandeur.

with pig's head croquettes and gougères

with Crab raviolo, samphire, brown shrimps, fondue of leeks and bisque sauce

with Chargrilled Englsh veal rump, violet artichokes, aubergine caviar, crisp brain, gremolata and roasting juices

  • 1994 Faiveley Chambertin-Clos de Bèze - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
Dusty, red fruited, restrained grandeur, very fine (92 pts.)
  • 1994 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
Sweet next to the Faiveley, a similar red fruit flavour profile, but a tad softer with more gaminess, lovely (93 pts.)
  • 2001 Domaine Francois Lamarche La Grande Rue - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Grande Rue Grand Cru
Others found the table pointed out broad sweet bacon fragrance, and they were right. Red fruited, a bit of spice and funk, not as refined as the two preceding wines. (91 pts.)

with Roast mallard, confit leg, buckwheat pancakes, beetroot, star anis and pear

  • 1998 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Richebourg - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
Yet again, red fruited, restrained and grand. Youthful, fine (92 pts.)
  • 1991 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Romanée St. Vivant - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Seven years older than the Richebourg, but really very similar with its silk and red fruits, a bit broader with hints of tobacco and exotic spices (93 pts.)
  • 1979 Louis Jadot Musigny - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
The most unbuttoned wine here tonight, funky, yet silky on the palate, perfumed, an interesting medicinal tone, super (93 pts.)

Plus some cheeses. - Bernard Antony gruyère, epoisses, vacherin, brillat savarin
