1/22/2014 (The Drake Hotel - Chicago, IL)

  • 2011 Château Haut-Bailly - France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Nice and funky nose; some mineral, dark fruit and mushroom. The palate had some smokey elements, earth and a touch of cocoa. Pretty good. (88 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Malartic-Lagravière - France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Very modern with a good deal of smoke, oak, and blackberries. The palate was pretty sappy and rich. Not really what I was looking for. (79 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Pape Clément Blanc - France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Usually this can be a bit too oaky and thick for me, but I found this energetic and floral. Sure the price will still be crazy high, but this is really nice. Nice complexity and layers of floral and herbal notes. (93 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc - France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Fleshy, dense, and sweet. Not very interesting. (83 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Canon - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Nice layers of dusty red florals, some tobacco, earth and a touch of oak. Very nice. (91 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Canon-la-Gaffelière - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Very sweet oaky nose with dark fruit, berries, and mocha. A real departure from the brilliant 2010 vintage. Not a bad wine at all, but a let down. (85 pts.)
  • 2011 Château La Dominique - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
A decent wine that already seemed a bit dried out with lots of smoke, tobacco, and ash. (77 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Figeac - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
I'm always ready to love Figeac, so when it's a bit off I'm crestfallen. This was super chewy, tannins were really wooly. The palate was more red than dark fruit, but this was a bit too one dimensional to really love. (87 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Grand Mayne - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Lots of raspberry on the nose and palate. Just super sweet with mocha and oak. (75 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Pavie Macquin - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Incredibly modern and very pedestrian. So. Much. Mocha. (71 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Troplong Mondot - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Loaded with coffee notes and dark DARK fruits. Palate was incredibly tannic with more dark fruits and mocha. Thought the structure was nice, but the flavor profile was just too modern to really love. (77 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Le Bon Pasteur - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
A pretty sweet Pomerol. Dark fruits, coffee, some tobacco and some nice florals are at the wines core. (81 pts.)
  • 2011 Château La Conseillante - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
What I liked about this compared to most other Pomerol's was its earthy component. Definitely some funky mushroom/earth stuff going on here which i really liked. Had some dense blackberry, coffee, and tobacco notes going on too. (87 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Gazin Pomerol - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Definitely my favorite from Pomerol. Super funky notes with some veggies, wet earth, and tobacco. Palate was very floral and balanced. This had a lot going on and I was a fan. (92 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Chasse-Spleen - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc
While the nose was green and interesting, the palate was super sweet and rich. This had a good start...oh well. (82 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Cantemerle - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
In a sea of heavyweights, Cantemerle drinks more like a featherweight. Like other vintages, this had a lot of smokey minerals on the nose and beautifully lithe dark fruits on the palate with some nice florals too. Such a great wine. (92 pts.)
  • 2011 Château La Lagune - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
Lots of blackberries with minerals and tobacco. Touch of green but mostly sappy black fruits and chocolate on the palate. (84 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Brane-Cantenac - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Pretty straightforward wine with some mocha, tobacco, earth, and dark fruits. The palate was a bit too sweet for me, but I liked the aromas. (83 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Cantenac Brown - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Decent fruit composition here, but the tannins were just too aggressive.
  • 2011 Château Beychevelle - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Lots of dark fruit, smoke, cherry, and cocoa throughout the nose and palate. Tons of tannins and structure. (83 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Gruaud Larose - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
A really nice wine with great structure. Certainly a dark fruit profile with lots of earth, florals and tobacco. Nice balance here...should be very nice in 15+ years. (90 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Léoville Barton - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Thought that this was very interesting. Layers of dark fruit, tobacco, earth, and mineral. Certainly has that classic, masculine Barton profile...but so coiled up at this point it's all potential energy at this point. (91 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Léoville Poyferré - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
A perfumed nose of oak, violets, earth and blackberries. Palate was layered, floral, and earthy. Has very nice potential. (89 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Talbot - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
One of the more mineral-driven wines of the tasting. Had some nice floral notes, reddish fruit and some tobacco. Liked it a lot. (89 pts.)
  • 2011 Château d'Armailhac - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
A very elegant, young Bordeaux. Lots of florals, some minerals and spice. Some wooly tannins, but I like the promise here. (88 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Batailley - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Wow. This smells just like coffee. Mocha Frappuccino in the house! (77 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Clerc Milon - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
One of the more feminine Bordeaux of the tasting. More florals than fruit, more tobacco than coffee. I liked this a lot. (88 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Grand-Puy Ducasse - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Lots of warm spices, some oak, coffee, and florals on the nose. Its palate had good black fruit, some earth, florals and tannins. Pretty big wine, but has some promise. (87 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
My notes read, "very boring. disappointing." That about sums it up. <sigh> (84 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Lynch-Bages - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Undrinkably oaky to me. What a shame.
  • 2011 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
A very masculine wine with dark berries, nice tobacco, and subtle earth. A lot of potential here with great layered fruits, earth, and florals. Very tasty. (91 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Found myself wishing this had more complexity. This was very simplistic and one noted with big, dark, dense blackberries on the palate. Put it away for a while I suppose. (85 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Bastor-Lamontagne - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Lots of tropical fruits; mangos, peaches, apricot, etc. Such a sweet wine...wish there was more acid. (86 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Coutet Barsac - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac
This was just loaded with coconut. That's the only thing I wrote down....COCONUT! (88 pts.)
  • 2011 Château de Fargues - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
A real highlight from Sauternes. Super rich fruit profile with a nice dose of acid to keep things in balance. More please. (92 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Guiraud - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Living on the edge here. Intensely sweet fruits; coconuts, peach, passionfruit with an important dose of mineral and acid. Without the balance this would have been just too sweet. (90 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
One of my least favorite Sauternes of the tasting. Super dense fruit and just far too little acid. (84 pts.)
  • 2011 Château de Rayne-Vigneau - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Another incredibly dense Sauternes with too little acid. Kinda boring. (84 pts.)
  • 2011 Château Suduiraut - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Off-the-charts on the density scale. Needs far more acidity. (86 pts.)
  • 2011 Château La Tour Blanche Sauternes - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
A real showstopper and one of the finest young Sauternes I've had. Complex tropical fruits (peach/apricot/mango) and just sizzling acidity. So good. Definitely a buy. (94 pts.)
