 5/22/2023 (Dan Murphy's, Lane Cove)

Phil had a spare ticket to this tasting and I was the first to put my hand up. They had a a few enomatics in the store at Uncle Dans so we had a quick look at a couple of Australian Shiraz after the tasting.

  • N.V. Freixenet Cava Elyssia Gran Cuvee Brut - Spain, Cava
Clean, medium minus intensity aromas, a little green apples, fresh herbs, muted bread yeast notes. Juicy, slightly tart acidity, plenty of bready yeast, touch of herbaceous underpin, softly textured leesy burr, finishes with very slight bitterness and a touch of alcohol warmth (despite claiming only 12%)
  • 2019 Pazo Pondal Rías Baixas Leira - Spain, Galicia, Rías Baixas
Medium minus intensity aromas of stone fruit, pear, clean, fruit forward. Softly juicy, pear, peach, tangy, touch of non-intrusive alcohol warmth. Hmm, lacks a little freshness/acid for me.
  • 2018 Badiola Rioja Viura de Cabezadas - Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja
Funky, slightly meaty, gamey, savoury, pear and muted stone fruit. Tangy, waxy texture, muted fruit, poached pear, very slightly textured rasp, lacks a touch of freshness, like the Albarino.
  • 2020 Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Campo de Borja Tres Picos - Spain, Aragón, Campo de Borja
Pretty red fruit; strawberries, slight sweet spice, touch of garrigue. Juicy, fleshy, fresh, softly textured tannins, alcohol warmth helps carry the red hued fruits; berry with a touch of cherry, a little herbal underpin
  • 2020 Bodegas Emilio Moro Ribera del Duero - Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
Dense smelling dark hued fruits, savoury, earthy, baked earth, a touch of garrigue. Juicy, savoury, dark hued fruits, talc textured tannins, a little cream and vanilla joins the fruit on the finish joined by a smidge of alcohol warmth but balanced. Nice
  • 2018 Marqués de Riscal Rioja Reserva - Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja
Vanilla, strawberries, cherry, sweet spice, plenty of oak here, a little green underpin. Juicy, fresh, red hued fruits, slightly woody tannins close down the fruit partially leaving the vanilla and cream, simple and nice.
  • 2015 Marqués de Riscal Rioja Gran Reserva - Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja
Savoury, strawberry, vanilla, slightly meaty and gamey underpin. Juicy, medium plus intensity acidity tightly textured woody tannins, strawberry tends to jammy and persists beneath this with a lick of cream, vanilla and an almost rice pudding note, long, polished, balanced, nice.
  • 2019 Yarra Yering Shiraz Underhill - Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
Savoury, plummy black fruit, sweet spice, a little oak. Juicy, savoury, plenty of woody textured but tight grip, dark hued fruits, a little plummy note. <shrugs>
  • 2019 Oliver's Taranga Vineyards Shiraz HJ - Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
Inky black fruits, sweet spice, a little meaty note, peppery almost. Juicy, savoury dark fruits, generous, fleshy, woody but talc textured tannins, Nice. Balanced.

A pleasant tasting. The two whites lacked freshness, the reds all showed well.
