2005 Paloma Merlot (USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District) 1/14/2020Schwarzer Hund

Dark red color, dark berry nose develops over time, plenty of berry fruit all in perfect balance with a long very smooth finish. Just what we expected after drinking Paloma merlot wines since 1994. (1818 views)

2005 Paloma Merlot (USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District) 4/3/2016Bella Colina93

Each and every time I opened a bottle of Paloma Mellott I remember Jim and Barbara Richard's and meeting them just as they began producing wine. Sitting on the porch with Barbara tasting some of their early Merlot watching the hummingbirds sampling the fuchsia nectar . Knew I liked it had no idea what a hit it would become 2001 wine of the year.
The 2005 is still drinking well. Takes about 1/2 hour in decanter to integrate everything. This is still a big Spring Mountain merlot in the tradition of Duckworth and Pride. (3498 views)

First night was a bit tight with coarse tannins on the finish. Decided to leave until second day and was rewarded with a plush, smokey wine that was much better integrated. Some sharpness on the finish but in better harmony with the dark cherry fruit and velvety texture of the wine. Nose more fragrant on day 2 as well. (2931 views)

2005 Paloma Merlot (USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District) 11/28/2014Seth Rosenberg89

Just pulled out a bottle to drink with non-wine friends. This is quite nice for what it is - it's ripe and plush, with dark berry and some plummy fruit, cocoa powder and spice. Maybe a bit of leather and herb. It's not to heavy - it's lively with some drive. Not really my style, but it did the job. 14.5/20. (3533 views)

A beautiful rose petal color. Smooth aromas and flavors of cherries and berry fruit.
This sumptuous merlot is delicate yet firm, like the hands of the strong, determined, and passionate woman who worked so hard to create it.
As I drink it, I sense the Peace that permeates her vineyard. (2724 views)

14.8% alcohol. not decanted, and frankly, why would you? i stopped drinking this wine after the very interesting and successful 01 (WS WOTY) vintage. why? you don't want to know. suffice it to say that we parted ways, proving every icon has their dark side. this bottle was a gift from a friend. i would characterize it as a liquified chocolate bar fortified with brandy. it's that sweet, and the alcohol has to be fudged. after one glass, i'm reeling. nevertheless, i can see why this would be popular with people who don't actually drink good wine. no complexity, but the one dimension it has is well done: mindless, sweet tannins and super ripe fruit. drink, hold, cook with it, who cares? Saturday Tasting Group (Knightsbridge Wine Shop (Northbrook, IL)): This was my second offering after my CORKED 2002 Kistler Pinot Kistler Vineyard (totally lame).
Medium dark purple in the glass. Blind this came across with lots of meaty spice - everyone thought it was a California Syrah!
Beautiful blackberries, blueberries, mocha, vanilla and some soft oak on the back end.
Palate does show some nice spice but the blackberries come through full force carried by a river of dark chocolate.
Balanced finish displaying very well integrated tannins which lend in its super silky mouth feel.
Everyone really enjoyed the selection, though it's just a baby. (6214 views)

Opened not decanted. Somewhat similar notes to before, but improved with bottle age. Dark and dense, with sweet fresh pressed black fruit, black licorice and a metallic / mineral component on the nose. On the palate: the entry is somewhat syrupy with sweet notes of raisin, chocolate and dark cacao working towards blackberry and a slightly bitter and dry finish. Heavier in body than it should be but the sweetness of the fruit offsets the weight. Not a great wine, but Good to Very Good. (5682 views)

Popped & poured. Medium garnet red in color. Aromas of red currant & smoke. Medium bodied wine, NOT your typical Spring Mtn profile of blueberries, chocolate, brown sugar and that lush mouthfeel. On the palate notes of cranberries, a little sour, astringent and acidic. Tight and really not budging. This wine is way too young to drink at this stage. I'll gas the rest & try tomorrow
Day 2 - This wine has definately calmed down. The blue fruit is starting to appear and there is a hint of complexity on the finish. Upgraded 2 pts to 88 with room for improvement. HOLD!

Opened not decanted. Gunpowder with some metallic notes (tin?) on the nose; starts out rather tight and opens up nicely in about 1/2 hour; nice weight on the palate with some dark raisin and citrus flavors; ends with a dry, peppery finish. My only complaint is that the middle seemed narrow and thin. Perhaps it will fill out more with age. Good. (5753 views)

Serious bottle shock going on here...
Tasted immediately after opening and the first sip explodes with a off with a ton of fruit...frankly too much...really sticky sweet. I let sit for 20 or so minutes and am suprised to see the fruit almost completely disappears...flavors of forrest floor, pine, anis, followed by strong tannic backbone...but not a thick dusty tannin texture...all flavors are a bit muted. Gassed 3/4 of the bottle and stored overnight. Opened the fridge the next day to take back out and found that my wife decided to take a "cup" out of the bottle for a beef tip stew receipe! Let the remaining half bottle breathe in a decanter for 4 hours....much better. Fruit is back. Subtle blueberries, cassis, with mellow pine, anis. Nice integration. Will let this go for a year or two before coming back. (5910 views)

Hmmm this bottle is not your typical Paloma style of big ripe flashy fruit from the get go. Really tight upon opening and not showing much 6 hours later either? Its not "green" in any way but the fruit is very lean, seems more new world bordeaux than CA, which I know sounds crazy. Big tannins, maybe the fruit is there and its just backwards right now? Im obviously not sure where this ones going so I'll be waiting to hear how it evolves before buying more. I'd say right now 04 was better on release and obviousley then 01/02 as well, but this one may have something hidden? (5754 views)
