My contribution to the flight and was flawed. Sad. Disappointing. Sucks... I didn’t want to believe PK and on the nose, was a bit hard to tell, but the palate said it all. Down the drain it goes. Hoping my last bottle is better. (177 views)

Eyes Wide Shut - Day 1 (A quiet place): Damn.. smelled like sailing into the Pacific with bsumoba on his boat. A bit overwhelming salinity and waterlogged corks.

Palate had light fruits that was actually there but this coating of slightly putrid sourness was slowly encompassing the fruit. It was not strong at first but with time, the corked flavors started to take over quickly. Pretty bummed about that. *chants* Diam.. diam.. diam! (275 views)

This wine is aging gracefully. I wish I had more to lay down for another 5-8 years because I think that is when it will hit its stride. The oak is still present but it you let it open for an hour it quietly takes a backseat to lemon, flowers, tropical fruit and glycerin. Has the structure to really impress in years to come. Beautiful expression of Cali chard. (254 views)

Vinklubben Dionysos 2024; 1/1/2024-12/31/2024: Kongsgaard Chardonnay 2020 er et beist av en chardonnay!
Gyllengul farge. Voldsom og intens lukt av smørmalt, marsipan, vanilje, appelsinmarmelade og temmelig tungt eikepreg.
Dette er heftige saker. Tung, oljete, stor og kjøttfull vin, brautende og på grensen til vulgær. Vi var fire som delte flasken - to av de andre ga den laveste score som noen gang er gitt i vinklubben - vi andre takket ja til et glass til. Det blir nesten for mye av det gode, men det er godt. Syns jeg. Tydelig smak av honningmelon, smørmalt og appelsinmarmelade, svært tydelig eikepreg (18 måneder på nye fat), men det pakkes på merkelig vis inn i en solid fruktdose. Vanvittig ‘trøkk’, lang og tung smakskurve, eiketanniner, godt med syre og minuttlang avslutning med smørmalt og vanilje på utpust. (276 views)

This Syrah was nearly flawless. Rich, dark black fruits envelop a core of herbs, olives, jasmine, and charred meats. It offers a powerful palate presence and a long, lingering finish. The depth is exceptional. Enjoy it now, or it will continue to impress for the next 5+ years. (76 views)

Last time I had this it was a bad bottle and the 2014 was stellar. Today the 2014 was awful and the 2015 was singing. This is in its absolute peak prime and best consumed within the year. A very well balanced wine that’s light on its feet. Stellar today. (125 views)

Annual birthday WWC hosting. As normal, 1 sparkler, 3 whites, 4 reds, 1 dessert, all presented blind.

As part of my white wine flight theme, I wanted to compare Hyde and Hudson side by side, then finish with Kongsgaard, since it is a blend of both.

Similar to the Hudson before it, I normally like to drink Kongsgaard on the young side, and also similar to the Hudson, on this day…it didn’t seem to have the typical opulent/massive profile. White peach and apricot upfront as well as sweet cotton candy on the nose. Ripe yellow and tropical fruits dominate the palate with sea salt, ginger and lemon cream. Faint note of butterscotch, but not near the amount I’ve found previous vintages to show. What Kongsgaard does well is have a wine of this profile but somehow find a way to have elegant qualities about it. Decant or hold a few years. (437 views)

Popped and poured. Clearly in decline but holding together ok. Medium golden. Autumn apples, cashews and vanilla oak. Full bodied, nicely integrated, pretty sweet tasting, some interesting complexity. (45 views)

This is spectacular…

Sight: Medium to deep golden color

Nose: Big nose of yellow Citrus, pineapple, baked yellow pear, Toasted Pie Nut, Macadamias, Popcorn, Carmel, almost reminds me of Honey Smacks cereal. Underneath the rather hedonistic aroma there is evidence of purity from the fruit and minerality.

Taste: Bam! Kongsgaard always delivers a mouthful of Chardonnay… that is clear here as it is viscous and full bodied, being considerably low in acid but a hair above what is needed to prevent falling flat. Lovely honeyed baking spice and concentrated flavors of yellow citrus with a healthy dollop of Popcorn / oak in the finish. The palate is refreshingly rich (if that makes sense) it’s not tiring which, I love, but the only thing I noticed is the alcohol starts sticking out more than I’d like at room temperature.

Overall: This Chard has always held a special place in my heart. This was a gift from a friend as a reminder of my first wine job.
John Kongsgaard is a very important figure in the Napa Chardonnay wine style, Making some of the richest chards in the Napa valley but with poise. It’s like a mix with a full sound that’s not too loud, a huge volume without making too much noise. Originally he popularized techniques of unfiltered and minimalist wines. he chose to adopt the more Burgundian style of patients with native yeast fermentations that could last up to a year, not worried about oxidization as the wines went through malolactic conversion.
He used lots of time, waiting, and elévage to let the wines comes back to life afterwards. This is clearly not the Burgundy wines of restraint but a wine of patients and time. In burgundy they are hands off and the let the wine be wine in the cellars…. and that’s what John did, now his son Alex, cheers to a great memory and wine!

This is terrific wine that continues to drink beautifully. Deep yellow with some gold. Yellow plum, honey, oak accent. The nose is gorgeous, sweet and complex. Fullish palate with sweet fruit and a fine buffering acidity. Mature for sure yet still tied and lively. Serious depth. A great California Chardonnay. Last bottle which is sad - drink up.
