1991 Château Gazin Pomerol (France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol) 9/7/2019englishmen’s claret98

The 1991 Gazin is a beautiful bouquet of Clorox and red fruit. I wish the Chateau, which is one of my favorites, planted Chardonnay. (1162 views)

1953 Château Lafite Rothschild (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac) 4/16/2018englishmen’s claret97

Ahhh... the legendary 1953 Chateau Lafite! The birth of my first child "marc'ed" the perfect occasion to open my own father's vintage year. One of the problems I have with any legendary wine is that I start at 100pts and find myself subtracting from there. The reason this self realization is important is that I find myself walking away being slightly disappointed instead of celebrating a wine such as a 53 Lafite.

Is this a great wine? Absolutely. The nose was an almost sappy, malty consistency with notes of cedar, red fruits & cherry. The palate shows light black cherry, leather with a strong pencil shavings all the way to the back of the throat. It was an extraordinary wine. The structure was intact until the last sip.

But why not 100 points?

It just lacked the character and complexity of the greats. Is it fading? Perhaps- but in fairness the finish lasted over 30 seconds. In summation, I would not chase the 1953 Lafite at current spot prices but would gladly grab a glass if you are pouring! (1871 views)

1961 Château Cos d'Estournel (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe) 4/16/2018englishmen’s claret93

Great provenance. I believe this was the first time it was stood up since it was laid down 57 years ago. In fact, this may be the oldest Cos I have tasted by at least 2 decades. The color is beautiful, with a slight amber rim. Plum, blackcurrant and cedar. Speaks to St. Estephe (particularly on the nose) but not a typical wine of the 1961 vintage. Broke down pretty quickly. I know the overall tone of a 93 rated wine seems off- but so was this wine from such a solid vintage year. This particular expression does not make me want to chase old Cos.

Side note: paired great with beef wellington! (2702 views)

1962 Château Lafite Rothschild (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac) 4/16/2018englishmen’s claret89

From half bottle. If you opened this bottle blind you would enjoy it thoroughly. However- if you opened it knowing it was a Lafite from a better than average vintage year you would have been pretty disappointed. A subtle win, barley holding onto its structure. Slight floral, violet nose. Typical cedar notes- but lacks complexity and vibrancy. (3843 views)

1999 Hospices de Nuits Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges Cuvée Georges Faiveley Maison Alex Gambal (France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru) 3/22/2018englishmen’s claret90

Hospices de Nuits is a charitable foundation in Nuits-Saint-Georges that supports the local hospitals. This bottling by Alex Gambal is lovely. 1999 was a terrific vintage and this wine is in a great drinking window. Some of these Burgndy's are overpriced due to the vintage year- this is a perfect example of that. Sweet nose. Pleasant dried fruit. (958 views)

1967 Château Suduiraut (France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes) 3/31/2018englishmen’s claret93

One of the better aged Sauternes I have had in years. This was so youthful. The fill was perfect and it drank like a wine half its age. I had to keep reminding myself that this was a 50+ year old wine. Beautiful amber color. Honey, orange and a hint of cinnamon. I would allow this wine to mature for another 2 decades! What a lovely Suduiraut! (2213 views)

1978 Château Palmer (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux) 3/31/2018englishmen’s claret92

Englishman's Claret has converted me to a Palmer drinker. It is in these "odd ball" vintages that truly showcase why Palmer should be chased regardless of the vintage. It speaks to the terroir and terrific job they have been doing at the Chateau for many, many years. This is very much a Palmer- violet, cedar, red fruits. The noise is very surprising for a 78. Look forward to drinking more Palmer- particularly in the more classic vintage years! Palmer>Margaux. (3643 views)

1989 Château Le Gay Pomerol (France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol) 3/31/2018englishmen’s claret92

I do not believe this wines is in the need of much decanting. I love the 1989 vintage in Pomerol and had high expectations. It is quite lovely but just lacks the nose and palate of one of the greats. That does not mean it is lacking the classic Pomerol nose of tobacco, dark fruit and a little hint of mineral. (2925 views)

2003 Château Suduiraut (France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes) 4/8/2018englishmen’s claret90

April Parliament: Commanderie de Bordeaux Boston

I was surprised how quickly this wine has come along. Great acidity. Not the best 03 I have had but I tend to enjoy Sauternes that age more slowly and take on more complexity. Nice enough. (3800 views)

1994 Château Léoville Barton (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien) 4/8/2018englishmen’s claret91

April Parliament: Commanderie de Bordeaux Boston

A fantastic Leoville Barton from what is considered an overall terrible vintage year. 1994 was tough because the of the late rains. Perhaps the St. Julian gravel saved this wine but it is a sleeper! 91, 92, 93 where such horrible vintages that the market was "thirsty" for a great vintage and overbought the 94s. So it is hard to justify the costs at times. The fact that this was served next to the 1989 didn't do it any favors- but this wine speaks to brilliance of great terroir!! (4636 views)
