1953 Château Lafite RothschildPauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more |
4/16/2018 - englishmen’s claret Likes this wine: 97 pointsAhhh... the legendary 1953 Chateau Lafite! The birth of my first child "marc'ed" the perfect occasion to open my own father's vintage year. One of the problems I have with any legendary wine is that I start at 100pts and find myself subtracting from there. The reason this self realization is important is that I find myself walking away being slightly disappointed instead of celebrating a wine such as a 53 Lafite. |

1961 Château Cos d'EstournelSt. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend more |
4/16/2018 - englishmen’s claret Likes this wine: 93 pointsGreat provenance. I believe this was the first time it was stood up since it was laid down 57 years ago. In fact, this may be the oldest Cos I have tasted by at least 2 decades. The color is beautiful, with a slight amber rim. Plum, blackcurrant and cedar. Speaks to St. Estephe (particularly on the nose) but not a typical wine of the 1961 vintage. Broke down pretty quickly. I know the overall tone of a 93 rated wine seems off- but so was this wine from such a solid vintage year. This particular expression does not make me want to chase old Cos. |

1962 Château Lafite RothschildPauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more |
4/16/2018 - englishmen’s claret Likes this wine: 89 pointsFrom half bottle. If you opened this bottle blind you would enjoy it thoroughly. However- if you opened it knowing it was a Lafite from a better than average vintage year you would have been pretty disappointed. A subtle win, barley holding onto its structure. Slight floral, violet nose. Typical cedar notes- but lacks complexity and vibrancy. |

1999 Hospices de Nuits Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges Cuvée Georges Faiveley Maison Alex GambalPinot Noir more |
3/22/2018 - englishmen’s claret Likes this wine: 90 pointsHospices de Nuits is a charitable foundation in Nuits-Saint-Georges that supports the local hospitals. This bottling by Alex Gambal is lovely. 1999 was a terrific vintage and this wine is in a great drinking window. Some of these Burgndy's are overpriced due to the vintage year- this is a perfect example of that. Sweet nose. Pleasant dried fruit. |

1967 Château SuduirautSauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend more |
3/31/2018 - englishmen’s claret Likes this wine: 93 pointsOne of the better aged Sauternes I have had in years. This was so youthful. The fill was perfect and it drank like a wine half its age. I had to keep reminding myself that this was a 50+ year old wine. Beautiful amber color. Honey, orange and a hint of cinnamon. I would allow this wine to mature for another 2 decades! What a lovely Suduiraut! |

1978 Château PalmerMargaux Red Bordeaux Blend more |
3/31/2018 - englishmen’s claret Likes this wine: 92 pointsEnglishman's Claret has converted me to a Palmer drinker. It is in these "odd ball" vintages that truly showcase why Palmer should be chased regardless of the vintage. It speaks to the terroir and terrific job they have been doing at the Chateau for many, many years. This is very much a Palmer- violet, cedar, red fruits. The noise is very surprising for a 78. Look forward to drinking more Palmer- particularly in the more classic vintage years! Palmer>Margaux. |

1989 Château Le Gay PomerolRed Bordeaux Blend more |
3/31/2018 - englishmen’s claret Likes this wine: 92 pointsI do not believe this wines is in the need of much decanting. I love the 1989 vintage in Pomerol and had high expectations. It is quite lovely but just lacks the nose and palate of one of the greats. That does not mean it is lacking the classic Pomerol nose of tobacco, dark fruit and a little hint of mineral. |

1995 Château MonbousquetSt. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more |
3/22/2018 - englishmen’s claret Likes this wine: 88 pointsThe 1995 vintage was celebrated on both the left and right bank. They are known for being a tad austere and lacking finesse. However, St Emilion was known as a region that had some real success. Deep purple, abundant black fruit and a tad low acidity. Unfortunately it did lack the finesse of the the great right banks of the vintage. Monbousquet in the right years can be a great value play for a “Wednesday night” wine- but this really lacked the notes I tend to enjoy with this Chateau. |

2001 Château La Tour Blanche SauternesSémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend more |
3/18/2018 - englishmen’s claret Likes this wine: 88 pointsWhat a disappointing wine based on the reviews. I find LaTour Blanche to be such a consistent value play and 2001 is legendary for Sauternes. Decanted for about 2 hours (did we miss it?) because this offered little excitement other than a nice almond note that percolated throughout. I am curious if we had a bad bottle. Would like revisit. |

2009 Château Lynch-Bages Blanc de Lynch-BagesBordeaux Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend more |
3/18/2018 - englishmen’s claret Likes this wine: 92 pointsAlways great to see a white Bordeaux that sings! Enjoyed the complex flavors, balance and acidity of this wine. Would be interested to see what a few more years would do to the acidity and ripeness of the fruit. Paired with a walnut, goat cheese, red onion and dried cranberry salad. Fantastic pairing. |

1964 Château Lynch-BagesPauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more |
3/18/2018 - englishmen’s claret Likes this wine: 86 pointsFinally a bottle that wasn’t corked! Out of half barely decanted. Showed classic Lynch Bages notes especially on the nose. The 64 vintage was known for the rains and you can taste it on this vintage. Glad I got to store this wine in my memory but not rushing back anytime soon. |

1985 Château Lynch-BagesPauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more |
3/18/2018 - englishmen’s claret Likes this wine: 94 pointsLast bottle of a case. Each bottle was terrific. I have heard others complain about bottle variation but I have (luckily) never had that issue. This wine is why I drink Bordeaux. Classic Lynch Bages, classic Pauillac. 1985 was an interesting year for sure- so many bottles feel asleep for such a long period. However, this was the best wines of the vintage and continues to be a monster. Drink up and enjoy! |

3/18/2018 - englishmen’s claret Likes this wine: 94 pointsThis is a wine I have tasted many times over the years. The inconsistency always makes we weary. Tonight we got a good bottle. Decanted and revisited over 1.5 hours. Classic Lynch Bages nose, closed up for a while then showed some lovely green pepper notes on the nose followed by the lynch Bages tool kit of pencil shavings, mint and wonderful black fruit. Lovely wine. |
