2021 Bodegas Atalaya La Atalaya del Camino (Spain, Castilla-La Mancha, Almansa) 3/28/2024huse91

A bold and delicious Almansa wine completely in line with the previous vintages. A blend of 85 percent Garnatxa Tintorera (the prominent grape variety in the Almansa region, a cross of Grenache and Petit Bouschet) and 15 percent Monastrell, sourced from vineyards between 700-1000 meters above sea level (sand and limestone soils). Maturation: aged for twelve months in French oak barrels. Decanted: one hour prior to serving. Color: very deep dark red with some purple reflections at the rim. Bouquet: impressive nose exhibiting scents of ripe plum, forest fruit, kirsch liqueur intermixed with nuances of black pepper, leather and cedar wood. On the palate: a powerful, elegant and well-balanced wine with abundant red berry and bramble fruit, quite a creamy texture, present but already ripe tannins and a fine supporting acidity. Finish: complex and persistent aftertaste. Food pairing: a good match for game and stew dishes. Optimal enjoyment: a pleasure to drink now, but the wine might benefit from the cellar for a couple of years more. A whole lot of wine for the money.

Rijping: twaalf maanden in Franse eikenhouten vaten. (928 views)

2019 Bodegas Atalaya Almansa Laya (Spain, Castilla-La Mancha, Almansa) 1/11/2024PNIELSEN89

This wine has definitely benefited from the couple years of bottle age prior reviewers said it needed, and it has the stuffing for a couple more. Killer QPR. I tend to pick this up as a weeknight wine, but it would be interesting to see what becomes of it in 2-3 years if I was to stash one. (89-91) (182 views)

2021 Bodegas Atalaya La Atalaya del Camino (Spain, Castilla-La Mancha, Almansa) 1/7/2024LiquidThoughts.de88

ENGLISH:
Nose: Blackberries, violets, freshly pressed, tart plums, some licorice, clove, olives, wet leather
Taste: Black olives and an exciting salty note, capers, oysters, pickled young plums, clove, allspice, myrrh, very unusual combination of notes, relatively tart but not too aggressive, freshens things up a bit overall
Comment: Quite unique in its combination of notes, not for everyone, but a great aromatic journey and not unbalanced, but clearly on the bitter side.

ORIGINAL (GERMAN):
Nose: Brombeeren, Veilchen, frisch gepresste, säuerliche Pflaumen, etwas Lakritz, Nelke, Oliven, nasses Leder
(133 views)

12/17/23-Cork deeply stained, almost black, and tartrate acid crystals adhere to it. Very fruity, what to me is a monastrell profile. Low acidity, or at least dialed down. Mainly Grenache but I get mostly Monastrell. Hopefully no free floating crystals and if any most likely sank to bottom. Why would this have so many crystals? For what benefit of purpose?
Most reviews of previous vintages say a good value, fruity, not too oaky, and most consider it a good buy. I wanted a cooking/sipping wine without breaking into a more costly bottle.
Now 12/21/23. This wine grew on me. I didn't use any for cooking and consumed instead. I've had it vacuum sealed and had a small glass every now and then. The fruit is prominent, so much so I didn't know if I liked it. Mostly Grenache but I thought it was something else like mourvedre or monastrell. Made me wonder if this fruit profile was artificial in some way. It was intense almost to the point of coming off as sweet. But its held up and I would buy it again. Made for immediate consumption. 2020 Bodegas Atalaya Almansa (Spain, Castilla-La Mancha, Almansa) 11/28/2023sulty87

Drank it over a week or so and I loved the evolution. Initial glasses were overpowered by unbalanced oak. A lot of fruitiness but hidden behind tons of cedar, pepper and earthiness. Few days into the bottle dark fruits came into spotlight. I'd say it will be best tomwsit with drinking it or decant for few hours. Very good wine with potential for 89/90 imho (117 views)

2021 Bodegas Atalaya La Atalaya del Camino (Spain, Castilla-La Mancha, Almansa) 10/18/2023Kathleenbiffle90

Deep purple intense color with a ruby rim, robust, fragrant aromas with rosehips and hints of leather and savory herbs. At first taste it proclaims a sharp raspberry and red plum on the palate. After some time to breath, flavors merge into more complex darker blackberries mid-palate with cocoa hints. Minerality lingers in the tannins for a grippy finish. Garnacha Tintorera 85%, Monastrell 15% (179 views)
